i just dont get the point of those huge mixers that cost about 4000 dollars... like what does that thing do, compared to one thats small and much much less expensive

More channels. No scrolling back and forth on a computer screen. Big old analogue desks had a whole bunch of channels for inputs when tracking and a whole bunch of channels for the tape returns. Channels for subgroups too. Much more efficient than messing around patching and repatching a smaller mixer. Impresses the clients too!

Just like tweaking knobs on hardware synthesizers, there's something about physically manipulating controls that is different and more "musical" than pushing a mouse around. Not so bad for your eyesight either :D

Expensive mixers can have REALLY good preamps, so essentially youre getting a mixer with A LOT of flexibility (many channels, inserts, subgroups, aux sends, effects sends, etc, etc...) with all the preamps youll ever need included.

Plus their EQs, compressors, gates, limiters (if they have them) usually eliminates the need for a lot of outboard gear.

In the end I would say that it is basically because they give great sound, last long and well, if you wanna track 24+ channels you need 24+ inputs generally.

ya think that's expensive... it used to basicly start at @$40k and could go as much as @400K...

I was going to say...

I haven't heard too much "magic" out of a $4k mixer. $40k, $400k, sure.

Come to think of it, I never saw a "giant" mixer for $4k either.

Think about it, it has mic preamps, Eq's on each channel, 16 routing busses, etc...

If a decent mic preamp costs $500 and a mixer has 16 of them... A decent parametric EQ costs about the same and a mixer has 16 of them...

$4000 is nothing for a real mixer. Mine cost $9000 new and it is just the upper low wnd of serious mixers. The one I want to get next is $75000 used!

A few years ago, you didn't mix on a computer, you used a mixing board. So you needed on channel for every track. That was the point of them. If you have a good one, it will sound better than mixing in the box.
