Getting noise and hissing when recording guitar notes

Hey guys,

I'm creating a guitar iPhone app in which I have to record each note of the fret board separately. I have a Korg Toneworks PX2 which is an effects box which you can plug into an amp or simply just plug headphones straight into. I'm plugging my guitar into that and then plugging that straight into the headphone jack on my laptop, and I'm recording in Audacity. Problem is I'm getting a lot of hissing/noise as the note gets quieter... I have uploaded an example here:

Is it normal to get this problem or is it likely a specific problem with my set up ? Could a better sound/no noise be achieved with the setup I have described?

You guys seem to be veterans at this so any help would be appreciated !

I think you mean your plugging straight into the mic jack on your laptop right?

This is not an advisable method to record through - you need a decent interface or you can probably find some samples already made online...

Yeah sorry, I meant mic jack.

What would be a decent interface? I've found that if I plug it into the amp instead of the PC and actually perform the same 'pluck, let ring out' move i get the same noise on there. So thinking maybe it could be my guitar ? Did some reserach and my dual single coil pickups is just that, not humbuckers. Kind of get the same effect when I plug the electro acoustic in instead of the electric though, albeit to a lesser degree, so not really sure.

Sorry I didn't listen to it before - yeah that sounds like pickup hum - Sorry not really sure how to (or if you even can) get rid of that - you need humbuckers

someone in the recording forum might now a trick -

For anyone that finds this post - I have found it to be the Korg Toneworks PX2 that is causing the problem ! Apparently it has some output defect with distortion - found some other people with the same problem after some googling.

Hello Dear , I agree with the chopsalot that it sounds like the problem comes from Korg Toneworks PX2 . It is a common problem and you have to see it.

i had the same problem when i recorded guitar into pro tools. its electrical noise. you'll wanna get a power conditioner, good cables, pretty much just good gear all around to totally eliminate it. or you can get just use a noise deduction pedal or plugin, but that usually messes with your tone. it could be caused by anything. ususally you can get rid of it by playing about 10-15 feet away from your gear. like if your playing right next to your computer than it will do it even more. make sure your cables are not crossing over each other too. this is a very common problem for everybody that records guitar. plugging all of my gear into a power conditioner and getting rid of ground loops fixed it for me. i hope this helped!

You might try a notch filter. Set it for a narrow Q and move the frequency around until you dial in the problem frequency and then set the rolloff for -18 to -24dB.
