The studio's produced one demo album so far, and has settled into a reasonably good workflow arrangement. My desk is a mess, however, and I need to get things settled once and for all.

Some Background:The room is a 20x30 multi-purpose space above my detatched garage. It must serve all these purposed pretty much equally.

Listening Room:

I am a vinyl collector, so there are two sets of vintage hi fi speakers connected to my baroquely complicated stereo system. Stereo imaging and decent bass response can't be compromised.

Party Room:

It's great to have a soundproof room to have grown up time while the toddlers are sleepin'!

Rehearsal Space:

The majority of the man/woman hours spent in here are for my band rehearsal, my wife's singing practice time, and all too rarely, bass woodshedding.

Recording Studio:

My band plays jazz, bossa, and some '50's rock. I would love to get a good synth workstation and see what I can put together solo.

My desk is a beautiful burl wood large art deco desk in great shape. I'm definitely not getting rid of it in favor of some particleboard and plastic crap.

My laptop is my best computer right now (1.7), so I've been running LE on it with my old 15" lcd as a second monitor. My tower is not up and running now, and is only a Celeron 1.3-- so I haven't bothered setting it up as a permament fixture out there-- I don't want to go back to a single monitor.

The desk is a bit out from the wall so I can squeeze back there and access everything

I have a 1604 VLZ pro, a firepod, a beringer multicomp 4 and some v4's. I also have a 16x4x100' or 150' snake I rescued from the trash at work.
I like to be able to reach my -10dB stereo system from the mix position. The Rhodes is a good place to put my turntables, so it needs to be near the stereo. Lastly, I don't want to permanently block up the only window I have too much with racks and monitors.

Any suggestions about arranging the desk? My current plan is to have two three or four rack spaces on either side of the desk, a painted board accross with the monitors on them and the mixer slid underneath. Using the laptop makes it all a bit awkward, though.

:p And nobody say anything about my sheetrocking and taping! I was in a rush-- had only a few evenings to do it to make room in the house for a new baby!

I thought gestation was supposed to be 9 months for humans?

You shoulda seen me. I sheetrocked that whole damn 20x30 room alone with first a layer of 1/2" soundboard followed by a layer of 74-pound-per-8x4 sheets of 5/8ths firecode sheetrock. It was really down to the wire getting all the furniture and instuments out of the spare room in time.

Anyhow, people, I redid the front of the room quite a bit last night, but still have not done the desk yet.

The laptop+ monitor makes it really hard to use the space efficiently.

You can get a side clamp surface mount for monitors and raise it off the work surface a little bit, freeing up some space.

This is the one I use, but I've got two monitors. I'm sure someone makes a single monitor version of this as well if you'd like to go that route. Check out that price as well, I couldn't believe it.

It's strong and sturdy, I've had it mounted with a 19" and a 17" on it for about two years now just off the backside of my desk and I've never had to retighten or adjust it at all. No monitor sag, etc. The arms are articulate so you can move them in and out and swing them foward and back.

Nice. If I do make a bridge/shelf then I'd have something to clamp it to. Not expensive, either. Very cool.

That'd work, It sits high enough that you could just use the back side of your desk too. You can put padding between the points, as not to rough up your finish. Otherwise, your spot looks very condusive to some good vibes, I dig it.
