Getting high frequency hum 960 Hz......

I'm going to buy a better mic cable balanced braided sheild in hopes that it will eliminate this (or find a good shrink)
question: What is quad connector? I assume 4 pins on the xlr. can I use those with my regular mic and lexicon (3 pin) or is this a specialty item?

With The Greatest respect cb56, you are thrashing about a bit. A new "better" mic cable will not help if, as I suspect, the problem is RFI since the RF current is running down the shield. Braided shields are in any case not as good as foil, just that foil is not as flexible or rugged (plenty good enough for home jockies tho!)

The ferrites I linked to will likely cost less than a good mic leads, a $ or two in fact.

Do you mean "Star Quad" cable? This is used for long runs in very electronically challenged areas (near big traffs or machines). Not going to help you.

Again, WTGR, you are suffering from classic noobism. You want to use recording gear but you don't have clue one about electricals. Most of the top recordists of yesteryear were technicians FIRST and then learnt The Art. Not for nothing were they called Recording "ENGINEERS"!!

Now! CAN you record the tone and hear it back?..... Please?

Dave.

Yes I can record it and hear it. Sorry I'm a musician first just wanting to do demos, I know I'm a noob. See the forum I posted in "NEWBIES" I don't have an auto mechanics Certificate yet I still drive a car. If the Newb forum is to frustrating to you, how 'bout just hanging out somewhere else?

Now don't get testy! I am here to help. You don't need a mechanics cert' to know where to put the oil and water, change a tyre/lamp or jump start a dead battery? But there are people that drive that don't and the second there is a problem, they are stuck.

You only need some basic electronics knowledge to solve certain audio issues, with help from forums as well. Learn to solder, buy a basic $10 digital meter and learn basic Ohms law. And you will not get very far in audio without at least a basic grasp of decibels.

I might be 50yrs an electronics tech but in 2005 I was the noobiest noob when it came to computer audio. I had to seek help and yes, I got told RTFM! More than once. I don't do that. Years of demonstrating things like VCRs to Joe Public have endowed me with infinite patience.

Dave.

OK, I just sent the link to a buddy of mine that has his own studio. He also hears NOTHING but my voice. WTH?????
My apologise guys, but I still hear it during recording and playback. AND I can edit it out of the recording and hear the edit in/out on the recording.

Oh well I'll just ignore it. Thanks for your help everybody. and ecc83 I owe you a pint or two.

CB,
How are you listening to your recorded playback? Monitors or headphones? How are the listening device(s) connected: to Alpha or the Inspiron's soundcard output?

When you tried the other computer and got the same results, were you using the same listening device(s)? How did you connect the listening device(s)?

Both monitors or headphones same thing either way.

I've listened through the alpha and I've listened through the inspiron with the alpha completely disconnected.

Exact same thing on the other computer.(oh different monitors)

Dale

I know it's on the recording because I can edit it out by putting sections of silence/mute in the rcording. The hum goes in/out according to my edits. Why no one else can hear it is baffling to me. I'll try to record a playback from my monitors with microphone and do some edits. But probably not today.

Can you isolate the noise, a few seconds will do and export it as a .wav then send it in as an attachment? That way it is , AFAIK, just "data". Ah! can you burn it to a CD?

I recall something similar before where an interference did not survive MP3 encoding. It is not really "compression" you see, more like chucking a lot of stuff away!

No, when playing recorded file through any computer (at least in my house) wITH LEXICON ALPHA disconnected (not even in the same room) the hum is still there.

The file on reverbnation is mp3. When I play it back through my computer from reverbnation, I still here it.
I can save it as wav but not sure what you are asking (send it as attatchment) email it to you?

I am curious. Do you have a CRT monitor or flat screen? I was able to get close to a replication of the tone in the 9KHz range with my tone generator in Reaper. It almost sounds like my Magnavox 32" CRT TV-induced tinnitus sound that it makes when it first comes on.

Have you tried recording, then turn off the video monitor while recording the clip?

Flat screen/touch screen. Yes I have turned the video monitor off during recording. Same results.

How does the flat screen/ touchscreen connect to the Inspiron: USB or VGA/serial cable to the video card?

What operating system are you running?

Computer and monitor all in one. Windows 8.
BTW Sweetwater (where I bought the lexicon) is going to send me a new unit when they get back in stock to see if that helps.

UPDATE:
My proco quad cable arrived today. The noise is significantly reduced. Still there but I have to crank everything to "disturb the neighbors" volume to hear it. I'm expecting the clip on ferrites to arrive any day now. I'll let you know how that goes. BTW New Lexicon unit arrives tomorrow also.

Keep us posted man! I am really curious to know what the cause was.
