Getting head-

for my bass drum. I need some suggestions. My budget is probably going to be about 60 bucks I can spend more if I have to but I also need a new crash and guitar stuff so what would you suggest for something 60 bucks or less? I really would like the best bang for the buck and I'm really not to picky about the head but I would really more or less like to know which ones to avoid. It's a Pearl Export 22" bass drum. I have been very faithful to Evans in the past and have fallin in love with the EQ4 head but the head I had last the Remo Weatherking Pinestrip-- which had a horrible tone IMHO-- just broke about a week ago. I play alot of hardrock/metal with both heel up and heel down so I would really like something that can hold up. I would really like to try something that maybe has some sort of muffling device with it but I'm not to familiar with this sort of thing (I've always used a pillow :p) OK so if anyone has any ideas or is just itching to voice their opinions on a certain head/brand please go ahead and get political. I like a quick attack that has that classic metal "click" to it. I really don't want my bass drum to sound like a 10 in tom on steroids. :p
 
If you really want that heavy metal "click" just get a Remo Ambassador batter head and a Danmar impact pad! Use it with a plastic or wood beater. Not only will you get that exact sound, but the life of the head is longer because the pad takes the brunt of impact.

Stick with a pillow or a towel.
 
If you play really hard to the point where you break a two-ply Pinstripe head, I'd be a little hesitant to go for the Ambassador, since it's a medium weight single ply head. You could also try an Emperor, which is two ply like a Pinstripe, but without the stuff in the middle.

But yeah, I'd definitely go for a good hard beater whatever you choose.
 
Evans EMAD kick - I'm a REMO bummer myself but I have to say the EMAD has given me some fantastic recordings!
It's the one with the circular foam padding, slap a Danmar patch on as recommended above, and then if you like the sound you only have to replace the £5 patch not the £30 head. Genius!

Both have built in and adjustable muffling. Both can tune low, punchy, and clicky - if you use the dot sticker thing. I've used both with great results.
 
I'm a fan of the Evans Emad. I also think an impact pad used in conjunction with a hard beater would help give you the attack you want
 
Evans EMAD I or EMAD II - the two is a double ply, but I cannot comment on it's sound. the EMAD I is a full-sounding head. Get a patch to put on it. There was a plastic patch designed by the drummer of Soulfly - read about it in MD, it's a polycarbonate patch - a little tougher than the other patches, and it'll give you a clicky sound if you use a wood beater. Use a pillow or some sound-proofing foam inside your bass-drum. Too much pillow sounds like caca, but a towel or small blanket will be nicer, or the foam.
 
I'm one of those people that could care less about the names on my heads. I only care about the sound, feel and durability.
With that said, for the last several years my go-to batter head is the Aquarian Superkick series. I like all the models and have yet to break any of them. The muffling ring provides a great tone right out of the box.
Any single ply front head.
 
Thanks guys! I appreciate all the suggestions I'll be sure to think hard about which one I pick but now it seems like it will be even harder to make up my mind after all of these suggestions!
 
I just wanted to add some closure here. I bought the Evans EMAD2 batter head and I LOVE IT! I bought the eq3 resonant head but they gave me the wrong one :mad: so I'll try and return it tomorrow. I like the head they gave me but I like to place my mic inside the bass drum which is kind of hard when the head doesn't have a hole in it! =P

Cut a hole in the head. +1 from me

I cut mine around a CD, easy enough to do. Glad you went for MY suggestion and liked it ;)
