Just another guy, really.
It's a short-scale, SG-body shape, Kay electric bass. Laminate body, transparent red finish, mahogny-colored, laminate neck. 20 frets plus 0 fret, two single coils that are made to look like buckers. Bridge is adjustable for action and intonation, albeit made of thick stamped sheet metal- it is compensated for the different strings. Two-piece pickguard, with intentional split between pickguard part and part that vol. and tone controls mount to. Wen I got it, lower half (over contrls cavity), pots, switch and jack were missing, as was the bridge cover and nut. Picked it up at a guitar show in Atlanta a few years ago because it was symetrical and I figured it would be good as a cheap lefty bass. Paid ten bucks for it.
Finally decided to put it back together, when I recently bought a Mexico Fender Jazz bass and decided I need money more than a second bass. Checked my stock- only two 250K pots, but I did have four 25K pots from Semour Duncan- sent as long-shaft replacements for pots that came with a pair of SD "metal" type 'buckers. Used a piece of plastic cut from a broken plastic dust pan, mounted and wired the 4 25K pots, (no switch- only one I have is a 3-way from a Strat, and it would not fit) and the jack. Sounds fine- 25K pots are such that the first half (silent to half way) of the controls are almost useless, but I can change them later, when I find a proper piece of b-w-b plastic for the pickguard. When all is said and done, I will probably have less than $75 in the whole project.
Thing is, though, I am seeing reports on the net where this thing might be worth upwards of $400. I am amazed! It's not a pristine example, but no major whacks, only smaller nicks here and there. Wish I could find a picture of the 2-pup version so I can get the pot/switch/jack configuration right, only pic I have found is of the one-pup version. One guy who reviewed the bass on Harmonycentral.com includes the serial number of his- but I can not figure out where the SN was, or is.
