Hey all, I just got my first multitrack recorder, a 414 mkii, so pardon my noobness. I got it used on eBay, and it seems to work fine, except that track 4 seems to have a kind of static hiss, particularly at high volume. I've tried playing tapes not made on it, and they exhibit the same noise. It happens both with headphones and over line out, so I assume it's happening at the tape, not on the output. I tried cleaning the heads, though I haven't degaussed as I lack the equipment (not that I imagine that would be the problem). If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks.

Check that the "dbx" switch is "ON",... not "OFF" or "SYNC".

I can't say I know right offhand what your track-4 hiss problem is,... but the dbx switch in "Sync" position defeates the dbx NR for track 4, only. In normal situations, the dbx switch should be "On" during record and plaback modes.

/DA
