So how many of you have issues with the musicians you play with when it comes time to record? Seriously, I let some small stuff go during rehearsals because I think you must pick your battles. However, when I began to record with my band, it felt like a nightmare. To be clear, I prefer to record with a metronome, because no musician has perfect meter. Well, these guys obviously never play with a metronome because it proved to be a truly daunting task for them. Mistakes and sloppiness started jumping out at me. Also, the drummer, right there in the studio, starts making decisions on how he is going to play the song. What?! Now, I am by no means a fabulous musician, but I pay attention to details like meter and pitch, but I feel that other musicians don't. Am I alone?

You're not alone but maybe a bit to rigid for the folks you've chosen to have in your session. IMHO the music I like best is not played to a click track because I like the human, organic feeling of a drummer whose time varies and reacts with the the playing dynamics of the band and song. Only up to a point of course. its true no one has perfect meter, but why is that the goal? If you have good players with you maybe try surrendering to let the drummer lead and see how it feels - playing tight and in perfect meter are not mutually exclusive. if you are insisting on a metronome because your drummer is not a good musician and his timing makes things feel sloppy then you know what you need to do and all the metronomes in the world won't solve your problem.
