Anyway, this thread isn't of much value now (at least from my side) so I think I'll just smoothly climb out of here and spend time on something more rewarding.
Well... the way I see it... you have to decide on WHAT you're reviewing...

From your "categories", it's apparent you're trying to look at it from a mostly songwriting perspective.... when in fact, there are many here with cool songs, but bad engineering.......

When I listen or comment on someone's tune, it is almost always strictly from an engineering viewpoint... commenting on the actual song itself is virtually useless since musicality is so subjective a topic and it's simply a question of personal taste.... (which is ridiculous to try and critique!)

And your rating system doesn't provide enough information to describe specific problems areas the "reviewee" needs to focus on.

Instead of trying to slot stuff into generalized chunks, why not simply listen to the stuff here and post your opinions..... from your perspective - (naturally... who else's perspective could you post from!?!? ;) )

Good luck....!

Bruce,

I have to give your ducks two thumbs up.

Allthough your salesmanship of said ducks seems to be waning.

Have you run out of ducks, or are you keeping them all to yourself? Don't be a duck horder!!

For overall duckability, and ducksence, three out of five stars, I think you can bring that up if you try.

Untill we meet again, same duck time, same duck channel.

Hey Erik...
Dont take it all so seriously. I was just playing around, didnt mean to be mean...hey, that could be a song!!! Anyway. The reviews are helpful not in a 1 to 4 star kinda way, but because they tell you, and sometimes brutally so, you should have added this or not too much of that...know what I mean. Reviews are a very personal thing, for the musician and also for the reviewer. What one person thinks is a masterpiece someone else might hear as a piece of crap. Anyway, I am rambling, I am a newbie myself so I wanna say "welcome" and no hard feelings...eh:p

Erik- Heya if your willing to, I've got a bunch of stuff here

http://ultratheband.com/

Review away to your hearts content. Just to point you in some direction. "Then and Now" and "River Song" are my current favorites "Twisting in the Wind" is a nice acoustic song. "Bomber Run" is a heavy metalish instrumental(currently used as a sound pack modification to the microsoft game "allegiance" ) and "Love and War" is brand new(rough mix). Enjoy!

I thought this was a thread about ducks!!

Don't you want to talk about ducks?

Allright try to forget about ducks. You can't can you?

Ducks are everywhere!!

Gotta go, I think there's one at the door.

OK.... enough of this REVIEWING crap....

...let's get to the important question: Who wants to buy a duck?

Erik... you're new here - I bet you don't have your duck yet........ Let me know how many you want...........!

GT... you still ok for ducks? Or do you need a refill??

Let me know, guys!

Bruce,

The webbing on one of my duck's feet has come undone, should I use ducktape to repair it, or send it back to you to be rewebbed?

My other duck bit me, and then quacked obsenities at me, I think it was the Elmer Fudd mask I had on.

Thank God ducks don't have teeth!!

You got any of those shinny green head ducks? What kind of wax is best to keep their heads nice and shinny?

GT

Don't need anymore ducks but I wouldn't mind being goosed.

Sorry GT... you didn't read the fine print -- re-webbing is the OWNER'S responsibility.... basically it's a user maintenance item.......... as well - I can't be responsible any language or behaviour the duck picks up while in your care.... maybe a 15-year puck-ass neighborhood kid swore at it and it picked up their habits/attitude!

You shouldn't have to wax 'em either -- they're self-waxing!

And Mike - sorry... you have to goose yourself - I only deal with ducks!!! ;)

This thread give me the perfect context to get a coupla thing off my chest.
1:When I post an mp3,I'm more often than not looking for a critique of the song, rather than the engineering, though I welcome any insight as to how I can improve my recording skills and technique.I just place a slightly higher value on the writing/arranging side of it.That may be why I'm still satisfied w/my 16bit soundcard and archaic guitar processor. This doesn't mean I don't want to improve in the area of fidelity,or that I don't appreciate and respect the opinions of those who listen and respond, which brings me to :
2:I have a difficult time getting people to listen to my mixes,which could be for a number of reasons,such as;
A)I don't spend enough time in "the clinic",listening to other folks mixes, and commenting. That is certainly true.Generally I'm guilty of
only participating when I have a new mix I want heard. This isn't as self serving as it may sound though.Generally, until I have a final mix,I'm spending most of my free time working on my tune!Whatever,I appreciate those who do listen, and will generally reciprocate as time and my 56k modem allow!
B)My stuff is either too heavy, too wierd or too depressing for those who have listened before.I can understand that!
C)I just suck, and people don't want to hear stuff that sucks.

Whatever the case may be,here's a guy offering to listen!I'll take it!Check out "Voices in my head"(my favorite so far)or any of the other one's,and give me your thoughts(or facial symbols) on any aspect of the material!

sorry dude... I think he abandoned this thread long ago... :D

:p

but I listened... :) I'll give you my smiley face review..

  :( :o :D

o.k.. so that doesn't really tell you much... so I'll use actual words. :p I think the mix was fine,... oh wait.. you don't want comments on the mix.. :p well, it was fine anyway.. ;) The vocals coulda been a little louder,.. they sat a little too low in the mix. But the instrumental aspect was pretty well placed. I dug that guitar lick that played continuously in the background. The leads were good.. even though you used an "archaic guitar processor" :D I liked the effect you used (for the lead) as the song faded better than I liked the effect you used for the actual "lead" part... but I guess it wouldn't be as "gritty" if you used a more "jazzy" effect for the lead.. (well, duh :p). I didn't like the vocal aspect of it too much... but then again.. I don't really like "metal" much at all so I'm not really the guy to ask when it comes to that.

I feel like a heal extending this thread. Beelzebubba-I listened to "voices in my head" cool tune. That repeating riff reminded me of robert fripp or andy summers, I love that kinda thing. The vox sounded in a decent spot for me, and the tune was powerful without resorting to heavy distortion (except for the solo which was bitchin). Only thing I really didnt care for was the snare sound it was kind of thin and snappy sounding, oh yeah and the fade out dropped off pretty quick.

I'll check out more later-for now maybe we should let this thread die in pieces.

Erik, your idea's fine, but I'm not sure what all of your four categories mean.

originality = originality :)

production = the engineering and sound quality?

charisma = the quality of the performance?

musicality = how good the song is?

I thank you both for your time, and for my part,I'll let it die!
