Get guitar to play synth sounds?

Ever heard of a program you can run your guitar and sound out to so it can play a digital sound in the different chords you play? I heard of amplitube which I think gives you just different simulated amps to play through, but is there something that will let the guitar play any wav. or similar file? Thanks.
