hey I'm relatively new to recording and I'm looking to record my band as professionally and as cheaply as possible. I am competent in cubase sx2 and i have a couple of mixers and pre amps and various other things but i only own 1 shure sm57. I need some new microphones. I'v ordered an akg d112 and I was wondering is there anyway i could buy a pair of drum overheads that would record guitar cabs well or vocals well. We play quite aggressive loud rock, think Foofighters etc. I Don't have a lot of money to spend maybe £400 at most, i think thats about $800. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks.

Yes, £400 is about $800--$753.12 to be exact. :)

Studio Projects B and C series mics are reputed to be very versatile; they've been used with success in recording everything you listed, and they'll keep you under budget.

See if you can try 'em out.

Then again, you do have a bunch of money.

Perhaps you should consider buying a pair of small SDCs that are more suited to drum overheads, such as the MXL 603s or Octava MC012s. Then, you could try out a bevy of mics and find the one which sounds best on your singer. It's up to you, man.

Thanks for the info I'll check those mics out. If anyone else has any recommendations please add them. I can get Rode NT1a's for a reasonable price. Would these suit as overheads and maybe guitar cab mics?

If i used an mxl 2003 and an mxl 603s as overheads would this work ok? also how would the 2003 be on lead vocals and guitar cabs?

Maybe you could get two Solaris's, then you'd be able to record in XY/AB/ORTF/NOS/Blumlein/MS....

Frankly, a pair of AKG C2000B' s would work rather well for what you want them to do, for under $400, at least in the U.S. They are good overheads, and fair on acoustic and vocals. Versatile and cheap. They're made in the EU, so the tax situation should favor a European buyer.-Richie

ok so thanks to all your advice i've narrowed it down to a pair of c2000bs or as was suggested by a good friend of mine, a pair of behringer b2 pros. Now i know behringer get a hard time round here, but im thinking that AKG are a more reputable name and therefore, the behringer mic which is equal price may be better quality as its an LDC and can't rely on a name. any thoughts?
