General Listening Speakers?

I appropriately employ a pair of KRK Rokit 5's for mixing. They are very precise, but are best placed at about arm's length facing directly toward the operator while seated at the workstation. At other distances and angles -- such as sitting or walking elsewhere around the studio space -- they loose the sound focus they are designed for.

I would like an alternate set of speakers for general listening of finished mixes, along with music CD's, etc. These need a wider directional distribution that will more uniformly fill the space. Preferred price range is $200-$300 for the pair.

Any recommendations?

Do you have any HiFi shops in your area? Not discount shops but shops that only sell good hi fi gear?

The reason is that years ago when I only had 1 set of monitors I went around hi fi shops looking for a good brand of speaker that they had traded in and were selling second hand. I ended up with a pair of Mission (UK made not the chinese ones being made now) speakers that had a new list of close to $1000 that I picked up for $300. I used them for years in the studio as the second set of monitors. Eventually I bought a pair of Mission Pro studio monitors (discontinued now) when Mission started building studio monitors. I still use these as my main monitors in the studio.

The old Missions ended up in my house and are still in use. There are plenty of top name hi fi speakers that may be a few years old that would be great as second monitors or just for listening to your favourite tracks. By the way the Mission hi fi speakers being sold now still sound great for the price even though they are manufactured in China.

Cheers

There are two pairs of KEF C20s (made in England around 1987) on Ebay right now. I have my two pairs stacked with the pair nearest ear level turned inward like monitors and the other pair facing straight back toward the opposite wall. KEF recommends placing them in the corners of the room, but I find that a little boomy. In my old apartment, I had them on a ledge between the stairwell and the living room, and they sounded fantastic with all that space in the stairwell behind them.
