ok, i'm ripping a cd with a cdr drive 40/12/40. should my cpu usage be at 100% like it shows? what might be happening?

i dont think it is the drive as i have used two different drives

Audio processing is very CPU intensive in general. Depending on the software you are using you may be able to set the thread priority so it allows you to do other things (browsing, word processing, etc.) if that's what you're worried about. If all you're doing is the ripping then that's perfectly fine, don't worry about it.

processor usage

I burn mp3's frequently (RealJukebox) on a computer running win95 with 320mb's of ram and only a 4x4x24 cd-rw. My processor pretty much stays at 100% also. I think it's just the nature of the process. I've even set up a 150mb Ram drive with my win386 swapfile set in it(talking about speed increase! having your swap file in ram is like turbo on an older system), and it still stay's at about 100%.

If you are just ripping as in copying the cd to wav files, then I would expect less than that. If you are also compressing to mp3 or so on the fly then it is very possible. Have you dma enabled on your cdrom's/hd's?

depends on the mhz really, 500-1g yeah i expect so, 2g maybe 70%...
