yeah, tape saturation is great but it's typically the type of effects that must be used subtly if you don't want to suck all the life out of the track. Didn't know that DAW, looks interesting, especially if you're coming from an analog studio.
And, since you asked, if you want to give me feedback on my version of this mix you're more than welcome !

I have been lurking, listening and learning, and had no intention really of posting here, but this post encouraged me to join in. I like the idea. Maybe best as a new thread?

I'm glad it encouraged you to join in. It's really nice to read how the thread has developed :thumbs up:

Also have been passively watching the conversation, cool that so many people have been involved in this contest. If anyone feels like listening to another mix here's mine, I'd love to hear what people think!

Hm... it won't let me post a link though. I'll try again later... or /reynoldsj/reynoldsj on soundcloud.

Hi Tyler, mine is done with H-Mixbus also, routed from StudioOne
I'm agree with previous comments about drums

Cheers for the feedback! You're very right about the drums! Especially when referencing them against your mix.
I'm used to mixing 6+ channels on the drums so just having the stereo overheads and the kick felt a bit strange to me, and as such I think in trying to get more snare, I ended up actually just putting too much reverb on!

Really glad you liked the bass sound, I was going for a natural style and I was really conscious of getting some clarity while keeping the low end - looks like I didn't do a bad job! :)

As for the vocals, I used a new DAW for this mix - Harrison Mixbus, which mimics a console and has built in tape saturation on each bus. In trying out the new software, coupled with trying to make the song sound quite rough and ready I think I may have been a bit too ambitious with the amount of tape sat. The effect sounds like it compresses as well as lightly distorts so that's probably where the over compression suggestion is coming from also.

Again, thanks for the response! I'm happy to return the favour if you have any mixes that you want some feedback on :)

Snare sounds great, kick&toms just a bit dull for my personal taste, vocal just a bit too loud or not perfectly glued with the track
(I'm not sure, but I heard something strange with the cymbals phase)
Just first listening impressions

Wow! Excellent mix Dave - very classy. Drums are perfect, vocals sound sweet. Lovely soundstage. Bass is very full-sounding & sits beautifully. The guitar is very, very smooth sounding - nice, very nice.

About the only thing I'd personally like to hear is a little more aggression from the guitar - That said, you have a very complete vision here - One of the best I've heard. Congrats!

Here is my attempt for the contest. Any constructive feedback would be great, thanks!!

Very nice mix overall Dave, If I could suggest possible improvements I would begin with pointing out that the guitar is a little high in the first verses, then seems too low when it should step up for the chorus and lead starting at about 2:00, then again for the big climax beginning at about 3:00.
Just a touch of change to create some build up and accent the big reward ya know?
Nice sounding mix though.

This mix has a great deal going for it. I think this is pretty much one of the best Iv heard so far and it fits my personal taste very well. You have cleaned up a lot of the problems that came with the files and created a really nice clear and open sound. I particularly like your drum and vocal treatment. Great mix!

I love Rajk's mix, maybe a bit too muche delay on the voice and the guitar sounds a bit synthetic. But overall excellent mix, very balanced.

I cannot link my mix here because of the 10 posts restriction, I try to put a part of the link if you'd like to try :

Wow... I wish some of the more recent entries like Dave and Rajk were posted earlier - they've given me a few ideas of things I'd like to have tried with my mix (EQ, sims, etc). But so it goes...

Anyhow, since I've reach my post quota and can now post URLs, here's my entry FWIW:

Hi Steve, thank you
I take it as a congratulation
Just to make you know, I posted here my mix two weeks ago (see on page 53)

I listened to you mix, it has a good balance, it's a good job
You took some courageous decisions on the arrangement like the saturated vocal on the first verse and the stripped sound on the breakdown, but are more artistic vision than mixing issues

Yes Mark, I'm totally agree with you, I'm not fully satisfied with my guitars arrangement, probably now I would take some different decisions
Thanks for listening

You know what? On June 21st, when the winners will be announced, everybody will be disappointed because s|he thought s|he was going to win!!! That's what will happen to all of us!!!
Except of course for 16 lucky persons. So be prepared for disappointment. I am ready; and you?

I don't think it matters so much, what is really great is to see and hear the different approaches and ideas that have been generated. I guess that the kind of community gathering that I have read on this thread is fairly rare? Its new to me, so Im very glad to find it here :-)

Totally agree David - If you're here only for the prizes, you may as well go & buy yourself a lottery ticket. If you're here to listen & learn something, if you participate, you definitely won't go away empty-handed.

Top job on this mix, Rajk! Everything is handled very nicely - great balance & control... The only things I'm not keen on simply come down to personal taste & preference, so they are not really worth mentioning.

An excellent mix.

Ok, so I'm a bit late in joining the thread, but I really don't want to waste the opportunity for constructive feedback. So here's my mix. I like un-hyped, natural sounding mixes and I'm not a huge fan of obvious effects, just so you all know where I was coming from. Thanks for listening! I'm hearing some really good mixes on here and I'm sure I could learn something.
