What did you find most difficult and challenging when you mixed the song?
Sadly, for now, they do not know the 'real' difference' in the file types ...and likely cannot hear it either... we are all - always growing. For me, at best, mp3's are like looking out a screen window. You can see your neighbor, but it's tough to tell if she put her makeup on today?
Everyone should do themselves a favor and upload .wav files.
Ha! So it did hit 2000 mixes! When I posted on another site about 4 weeks ago after uploading my mix, the count was about 300-400, & I offhandedly mentioned that I thought it might reach 2000 - & now it has! A lot of great mixes to sift through...
Regardless of who turns out to be the winner, I always find I learn lots from listening critically to a lot of mixes of the same song & commenting on them like this. If people aren't taking the opportunity afforded by this contest to do that, they are missing out on honing probably one of the most important skills that a mix engineer must learn - critical listening.
All the best, everyone!

All the best, everyone!
Personally I found the song quite easy to mix, a few things bothered me a little though: At first the snare bleed got on my nerves, but then I found out that the hihat was essential for the chorus, so I tamed it a little and it became my new friend. Second was the guitar that needed some more edge and "space" here and there, not in a "studio kind of way" but just for the excitment of the track. Last was the toms in the end that i first wanted to trigger, but didnt and I just settled with some low end eq on the overheads instead and lived with it. The bass was totally fine, i actually used both channels and the vocals was very nice to work with too, a little automation here and there did the trick for the whole song (for me).
To me this is a song that must live by it self, without too much help from processesing or other effects. But hey, that's just me!

Sound of wool - Gearfest puremix contest:
OK... so, I've been working on this mix for a couple of weeks and I'm still not sure if I'm there.
Can y'all tell me what you think, before I submit it?

My V2 update, I hope it has not become too bright.![]()
Yes , That' s what I thought also after computing it to other mixes . Thanx for the suggestion
This has been pushed hard!
This has been pushed pretty hard!
I think this is it.
After letting it stew for a few days, I got back to it today. I tweaked the sidechain compression between kick and bass, softened the eq on the kicks low end a tad, upped the bass in teh mix, and put some overdrive on the guitars.
I was having trouble with the hats being too present, so I went in and manually cut out all but the snare hits on the snare track so I could put the overheads as high as I wanted them to be. It was tedious, but you don't win competitions by cutting corners. I also brought up the applause at the end and used a super taps 2 to make it stereo. Anyway, let me know what you think!
