Here's my entry. This was great fun, and I feel like we're all pushing each other to improve and learning alot along the way.

Feedback is welcome :D

Good luck to everyone!

I had a good vision of how I wanted to mix this song, and I am very happy with the result. I was fortunate to be in the front row near the center for the Fab Dupont's tracking session at Sweetwater's Gearfest 2012. It was a great live performance, and the Drummer was stage left, and Guitarist stage right...So in my mix, I panned the Drums and Guitar Left and right, the way it sounded to me live. In addition to that, I listen to alot of music syles, and I particularly spent about an hour every night for 2 weeks listening to music that had a similar "vibe" to the Liza Colby Sound. I think the old school way of recording drums panned hard left (or right), and creating a stereo sound stage with creative use of panning techniqes guided my taste in mixing Oh Baby.
I tried to keep it real, and resisted the temptation to use special effects other than panning for effect.

Interesting approach. You should post you're mix here, i'm curious to hear the result...

I'm digging your mix man. Nice work.

Thank you very much. As the recording was already great I just focused on the dynamics and some light enhancements here and there. I also tried to keep the original "raw feeling" as much as possible, especially in the chorus.

Figured out how to get the link to work.
My apologies for the double post.

I can't post the url link yet, because I don't have 10 posts per this forum's rules.
On soundcloud, it is posted as my username ElectricBillYetti
The 10 post rule has been lifted.

Oh Da Baby!

Hello fellow home studio enthusiasts, this is my mix. I didn't use a single eq plugin, just multi band compression to affect frequency. Did this on Reaper with Roland MA-6s to monitor. Thanks for the feedback!

Ahhh Figured it out. Duh. Leave me some feedback! Good luck to all of y'all!

Anyone else having some massive phase issues? When I use sum/diff on the Dorroughs, I'm getting almost 15db of drop off. I also noticed once I move to the left or right of my monitors sweet spot, the bass and kick come out much stronger.

Does this mean that the RMS i s-16 to -18?

(Copied and pasted from the instructions....)

"Listening levels will be normalized from mix to mix, so there is
no need to ‘maximize’, ‘master’ or crush your mix hoping that it
will get picked because it’s louder. A nominal -18 to -16 dbFs
RMS (average) level is best."

Here's My third and final attempt! I liked the vibe of my first mix but my reverb was too high and the balance was all screwed up and the frequency range was too narrow. I started again and the frequency range was wider...the balance was still screwed up and the vocal sound wasn't very pleasant. This one is about as good as I can do with my current skills I think. I tried to make it sound "psych rockish" like my first mix but with a little more control. I also decided to embrace the mic bleed in the snare and pretty much leave it alone, ultimately it adds to the wild drum part. I did decide to mute the bass amp mic. I don't believe I know how to deal with that so I used Sansamp to make the bass sound cool to me.
The hardest part for me was finding ways to change each section that were subtle but just enough to "perk up the ears." The song is basically the same thing played three times in a row so I spent a lot of time fiddling around with stuff create a "new" feeling.
I enjoyed the mix. It was very challenging for me as I have only been mixing for about 5 months. Still, I think I've done a good job. Perhaps somebody at Puremix could sneak a private critique my way?
I mixed with pt9 on a win 7 system
Interface: UA Apollo Quad
Monitors: Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 6's
Plug ins: UA 1176, UA LA2A, Cambridge eq, Softube Trident A range, UA Studer A800, Roland Re201, Emt 140, Dreamverb, TLspace, UA Pultec Pro, Digi Compressor, Kreamer Tape.

Is anybody actually going to listen to all these mixes or does the winner live next door to Fab? It is the music business after all:guitar:
