Hey guys, here is my entry. Hope you'll like it !
Any words and comments welcome !!!

Here's my mix, let me know what you think.
I kept second guessing my choices around mix revision 7 or 8, so I ended up using an earlier mix draft that had a better "vibe".
Upon listening to some of the other excellent submissions, perhaps I should have started from scratch, but didn't really have the extra time to do so. C'est la vie!

Hey folks. I uploaded the wrong mix in my last post so here's the correct version. Basically went back to my original straight forward mix. Got rid of the panned and chorused guitars and did a few other minor tweaks.

As always, feedback welcome...

My Mix :D

Hi guys, here is my mix.
Very nice song and voice.

I mixed the song on a Macbook Pro with Pro Tools 10.3.5
I used Waves RChannel for EQ and Comp on every track.
Reverb and Delay for the Drums, Bass guitar, guitar and vocal track.
For the vocal track I used different delays. A slap delay and an automated larger delay.

Oh, yes, and just for final chorus, I used an overdrive on vocal track hehe

Hope you like it :D

Cheers!

what is the best mix you've been listening to so far?

I can only name the worst, and it was the one I listened to that was sped way the heck up. No idea if it was a sample rate issue or a dumb mix idea. lol

I've heard one pitch shifted down LOL, i hope it's a joke...

I would like to give people the ben. of the doubt and think it's just a sample rate issue they botched on import.

But then again, there are some interesting people on this planet.

Maybe he/she drank too much red bull and felt the song was too slow.

Long-time lurker, first time post on the forums. I go to a technical program for audio engineering, and we're a little spoiled with British analog consoles and acoustically treated tracking rooms, racks on racks of gear, etc. And I'm stuck at home over the summer with my Dell computer speakers from my parent's old computer, and the free demo version of Reaper (I usually use StudioOne or ProTools). So that's what I used to mix. :P I don't even own headphones, I'm pretty broke at the moment due to me also being a musician and having to replace a bunch of guitar gear that got demolished. Normally, I'd bus all the tracks to a control surface and mix old-school with the faders and near-fields. But being severely limited can be just as fun and more challenging. Since I'm new to the forums I can't post URLs yet, just type in the normal soundcloud URL, slash, then overdone-1. My first "official" mix is also up there, a cover of "that one Pixies song." (the one I'm really sick of). Check it out, and please give me comments and criticisms.

RMS Loudness

Hey guys,

Anyone know what the suggested loudness for the contest should be? Looking forward to uploading my mix! Good luck everyone! lots of awesome mixes out there!

Can't remember where I saw it but one of the Puremix folks recommended -18 range. I also believe they said mixes would all be normalized and listened to at same volume. Hope that helps.

Best of luck...

With more than a thousand participants one can't help but wonder if the jury will listen to every mix? It simply does not seem reasonable...

Hi Everyone

I'm new to the forum, thanks to this contest. So let's not wait any longer, here's my mix:

First off, I've listened to the existing recording of the band. They have a rather heavy sound on that recording, of which I'm not sure it fits the bands musical style best. But, since they are in control, I've tried to respect their choice for a rock sound, but I've made it a bit softer never the less. That's what we call a compromise, right?

Only a few tracks needed some corrective editing to remove hiss, noise and even the public at the end. Nothing fancy, just making it sound more like a record.

Anyway, I haven't been using that much EQ on the individual tracks. I grouped the main instruments, like "drums", "Bass",... and EQ'd those as groups. I did this because of the bleed, although not so excessive, and it kept the natural sound that way. But it was high-pass and low-pass filtering for the most part, with just some bandfiltering where needed.

I made the guitars sound "stereo" by adding a delay via a buss to the opposite panned buss. I really don't like doing this, I prefer double tracking the guitars, but I had to do it with the tracks given. This makes them sound a little more distant, due to phase relations. But I think it's ok, because they didn't need to be very upfront in the mix.

After that, I moved on to sidechaining the lot, to gain some power and impact. Drums, guitars, bass (with added harmonics, thanks to the standard Avid distortion plugin) and vocals. For the sidechained vocal track, I boosted the high a lot, to gain some sparkle in the track without making it to bright. Because I really don't like overly bright mixes at all.

I didn't use any limiting at the masterbuss, so my mix is one of the quieter mixes submited so far. I leave "mastering" to dedicated engineers anyway. So I prefered no to ruin my mix with tools I don't really master.

The gear used:
- Pro Tools 9
- My ears and musical taste
- Stock Avid Plugins, Some waves Renaissance, IK Multimedia
- ADAM A5x Monitors
- Command8 for automation
- Steinberg MR816x interface

Thanks for reading!

We assure you that every single mix will be listened to at least once. That's how we roll.

My mix for the contest

Hi, I posted something about 10 pages ago but heard no reply, would appreciate any thoughts. It's taken me a long time to realize I don't know everything about this, but I'm learning every day, and I feel I'm starting to get the hang of this. This is my second mix with my new monitors, but I'm moving so my room isn't treated properly.

-16 to -18dbfs, but each mix will be normalized.. so don't crush it with a limiter for loudness!

i'm guessing they'll shortlist and start critical listening at that point...

-16 to -18dbfs

probably 24 bit at 44.1... but you can decide that when you set up your session. if you chose right, it imports, if not, it will convert bitrate to fall in place

i'ma drummer myself and the hats were killing me... and stereo track sounded kind of mono to me. had to de-ess like crazy, and dump a ton between 500 and 1k... then waves S1 to spread it wide. that helped get me there, but still not ideal.

always listen to you ears... if they're tired, give them a break!

why is my reply to each entry posting to the whole thread???

frustrating!!!

think not overdoing was the best approach... band is raw and organic... no need for over the top production

agreed anthony... that's why i went with my mbox in lieu of 002R with the black lion audio sig mod... tracks were recorded wonderfully.. and felt the band wanted to retain a live feel... so i wanted everything ITB and not overworked

[ModNote: You didn't quite reply to other posts properly; there were no quotes so no one really knows which posts you were replying to... I merged all these spurious posts into one post for ya. Keeps tje thread cleaner. Welcome to the GearFest/PureMix thread and to the site.]
