Hello everyone,

I am mainly a guitarist,singer/songwriter. I am building a small "bedroom studio" (11' x 13') I have a good pc amd chipset, i just bought a m-audio delta 66 sound card and a midisport 2x2 interface, i have a korg x-3 synth for string arrangements/drums. I am looking to record some acoustic guitar and mic up several amps from time (roland jc-120,mesa boogie triple recto) I also have a line 6 pod proxt for amp sim.

I was thinking about buying an m-audio DMP-3 and several mics mxl603's? and a set of active nearfield monitors. can anyone recommend a decent set of monitors at around $200? do i need to purchase a 4-bus mixer to record the mic'd amps or can i just use the dmp-3 for everything? i am going to be recording all the instruments myself. any suggestions

Thanks,
Joe

i recommend the studio projects b1 instead of the mxl's

only a 100 bucks on zzsounds with shockmount :)

DMP3 is a great starter pre, I like mine. But then, I am relatively new too so my ears aren't as finely tuned as many around here. It seems to get good reviews across the board in terms of value for the dollar. Also picked up an SP B1 and it does very well for the money as well.

ARC 76, I use the chain you've mentioned to record acoustic guitar (DMP-3 and MXL 603's, matched pair) and for the money I'm very happy with it.

I use a matched pair of 603's through a DMP-3 to record acoustic guitar. I also own a B1 but much prefer the 603 for this application (even when mono miced).

The B1 is a better all rounder though.

I mic amps with an SM57, as do many others.

If you're going to play everything yourself, you don't need a bunch of inputs. The DMP-3 should work fine as a starter. Even after you upgrade (you will), you'll find uses for it. Look for some variety in your mic selection. The 603 is a fair guitar mic and a fair overhead. The Studio Projects B-1 is also a good cheap mic for acoustic and some vocals. My personal under $200 favorite is AKG C2000B. It would suit you because it's a good mic on cabs. I think you'll find multiple simultaneous amps in a room your size will be a mic'ing nightmare. I know a few tricks you can do with that Pod that will help. You don't need a lot of mics. You need about 2 or 3 that are the best you can afford. If you don't own one, pick up a Shure SM57 or SM58 also. For some amps, a cheap dynamic is what you need.-Richie
