Put your songs on http://www.garageband.com for FREE. They are played back in streaming format. You may or may not know how Garageband.com works, so let me explain.
Once you've submitted your tune, or tunes, it gets put into rankings by which listeners just like me and you can go listen to the tune, answer a few questions about how you did or didn't like it, and rate it 1-5. These ratings will put you in the ranks of some 30,000-40,000 bands/songs. If at the end of the rankings period...which is like 3 months, I think...your tune is ranked in the top 200, you remain in the rankings/contest to earn that #1 position. If this #1 position is achieved, you will get a $250,000 recording contract.
That's how it works, but now I'll tell you, as a signed musician, Garageband.com is cool because it let's you get a grip on what the "competition" is doing. Remember, these are bands that are trying to get signed, so they are, I would hope, trying to play well.
You get to hear the up and coming competition if that's what you're looking for. Or you can kick back and jam some really great, or not so great, unsigned bands.
To show you how it looks, go to http://www.garageband.com/artist/castoratekate
I hope this helps you spread your music to the world....

The upside of GB is that you hear a *lot* of music, some of it really interesting. The downsides are:

You hear a lot of music that's aiming at the market, which means it's not very innovative, it's tracking 'flavor of the month' musical taste.

Next, most of the reviews you receive on the music you put there are very much less than useful. I learn more from one thread in this forum than I learned from 20 reviews at GB. Here's a typical example of a review I got on a song there:

"What? You shouldn't make your voice go up and dowd. For example : Weee doo op. you should stick to the melody. This song alo loses my interest fast and I'm sure for a lot of other people to."

Huh? Well, if I don't make my voice go up and dowd, how can I sing the melody? However, I really do believe that person lost interest in the song fast. Just as well, really.

Here's another one:

"the song is odd.strange word sounds to this track. great guitar pickin though"

Strange word sounds? I suppose he's talking about the way I sing. I've posted two negative reviews because they're the funniest. But even the positive reviews aren't useful.

Also, it takes forever to go through the cycle of getting your song voted on.

Finally, and worst of all, you have to use Real Audio Player, which I hate.

It's fun to do once maybe.

I've also found it to be a rather tasteless site. Many of the artists there seem almost corporate & greedy, except nobody's making any money. Sad sad. A lot like mp3.com, but at mp3.com the messageboards can be ignored.

I found Garageband worth it just for the entertainment value of the comments.

I'm 100% through my evaluation there... I lost. I was really counting on the $250,000 to.

"I like the tune the instruments are playing. I am not too keen on the vocals, though. It sounds like Jupiter Coyote met up with Pink Floyd. The vocals aren't bad, they just seem out of place in this style of music. The arrangement of the music is good and there are pretty good dynamics in it."

"wish the drums
sounded better--it's a good song, played and sung well, just not crazy about the production value. i hear it more as an album cut than a hit single..."

"autumn ballad
Pretty damn cool. I really like the mood of the song, especially in the verse. Reminds me of Pink Floyd a bit, but with some Fleetwood Mac in there. Hmm, I like this song I think. Good tones, cool guitar work. Lyrics and vocals are somehow a bit unconvincing. i like the refrain pretty well. it really takes the verse up a notch which is great. jimmy page solo was pretty cool. and the phrasing is great... woops, I take that back--- it's actually more of a Clapton solo. What sort of amp is that? ok, enough wanking... cool tune."

"Right song, wrong era
Sounds like 1970 Pink Floyd (especially the voice -- reminds me of Gilmour back then). Nice song, though the singer is occasionally off key. Might work as a movie soundtrack. The guitar solo especially makes it sound like something from "Obscured By Clouds" -- beat doesn't change much but it's a visual song. "

I better stop listening to PF.

Exactly Dobro, fun to do once!
