Gain staging for recording and mixing

Hi all, I'm recording using a BOSS BR800 as my interface into sonar producer x1. In the settings of my br800 I have the record level being sent to sonar and the levels seem grand, but when I come to mix I put my faders at 0 and sometimes have to use gain knob at the top of the channel strip in sonar to increase my level to -6db, Any Ideas?
