Gain fader

Hi,

Is the gain fader in audio tracks some kind of compressor ?

I guess it's a different thing than the volume fader...

It might differ by application, but in Sonar, the gain (and trim) fader controls the input volume, so it sets the level of the audio before it reaches any effects or sends you have on the track. The volume fader acts after the effects have been applied.

An example of usage (in my opinion):

I have already drawn a complex volume envelope on my rhythm guitar bus. I want to boost the volume of the whole track by 1 db but I don't want to drag my envelope around in 20 different spots......I turn up the trim instead and don't touch the volume fader.

Not to put to much on it, but if you had a comp. inserted you would be effecting the gain reduction also in that case.
I like to think of trim and gain envelopes to get in the ball park, and volumes' for the final stuff.
There is also the 'offset mode options.
It's all good.
