sweeter than sweet

very much enjoyed hearing you again. You were the first person I heard here on the forum. Great. I do enjoy your music but there is one incy wincy thing that I want to know. Is there some special way you record your vocals? I just thought that at times only at times, please don`t get angry that there was a kind of effect making it sound high pitched and slightly chipmunky.

I love you and your girlfriends stuff though. I would really really like to here a demo with you two and the guitar. I think it would be beautyful!

Erland

TripleM-Thanks. Glad you like the guitars and stuff. Not sure what squeaky means, but that can't be good! Feel free to explain. Thanks again.

erichenryus-Thanks a lot. Glad you were patient! That's cool that you like the other 2 better. This one's just supposed to be a fun tune (and Cyan likes it the best, so there you go! :) ). Thanks for checking out the tunes, I really appreciate it.

H2H-Thanks! Yes, that's what the intro is supposed to be! I wanted this song to be just sort of a campy future/retro thing, with kind of an early 70's influence. The 'synth' type sounds are actually mellotron sounds effected, and the spaceship sounds are all me making spaceship sounds with my mouth! :) I wanted the effects to be kind of lofi funky, like out of a 50's science fiction flick, but maybe it's not lofi enough. May re-attempt.
Thanks H2H, hope you can get the rest of the tune, and I got your email, will reply soon!

Kramer-Thanks man! Glad you like all the tunes. Especially Millenium!! Whoever has the VF-16 must have done that one. :D (don't have a song called Millenium  ) Thanks again.

twist-Thanks. That is really a great compliment. I appreciate it!

TexRoadKill-Thank you! You're probably right about those FXs things. In fact, my girlfriend thought the same thing about the jet sound going into the song, so she's happy you backed her up on that! Hmmm, a commercial jingle for a tech company, $$$$$$! Not that I'm in it for money (to say the least  :( ), but...:D Thanks, I will email you when we're ready. Won't be long now, I hope.

Guernica-Looking forward to what you think. Hope yer not disappointed.

Erland-Thanks for checking it out. About the chipmunky vocals, could you point out a specific spot, so I could listen? Maybe that's what TripleM meant by squeaky. The only thing I can think, is that my girlfriend's voice is pretty high, so maybe when she's layered or doing a high harmony. If you could point out a specific spot, that would be great. As far as a more simple approach, definitely planning that. I really want to strip down from the big arrangements, it's a lot of work. All just a part of trying to make a "real" CD at home, I guess. I think you're on to it, though, have other people do it (which really makes the most sense!) :)Thanks again.

no

that sounded too harsh. Sorry, no offense given please. You pair sing like birds its great! I was just wondering if you recorded it in a special way and would love to hear you the guitar and a georgeos harmony. This place would go wild for it I think. Just pick your favourite song and do it for a laugh?

Erland

No offense taken! :) Still curious what you were hearing, but...anyway, yeah I suppose that could be fun, I've got lots of different songs, little acoustic songs, and piano ones. Maybe, will do that. Right now, I'm concentrating on finishing this deal up, though, but who knows. Thanks.

Macle

Yes you do have a song titled Millenium.LMAO!
That one song must be the VF-16 cut.I've downloaded too much music off this site and now Im mixing the S%#! together!:D

Taking my words back:

Macle:

After listening to Future more, I realized that the intro does lead into the song very well, and it doesn't sound techno anymore! I have no idea what I was on when I thought it sounded half techno...Now, I think it is a cartoonish intro, which I totally dig, and I think it should be a keeper.
What's your picture of this song? Back to the future? The intro is furturish, but the body is quite modern, and the end is like getting back on the time machine and going back to the future. Umm..Maybe I should start listening to the lyrics more, a bad habbit of mine.

I realized that I'm not into the production because it does not conform to my myopic definitions of what a good mix should be, not your fault.

I love the arrangement. I just found the vocal sound weird. Sounds highly scooped. A lot of sizzle about 12 or maybe 16k, but not a detail in the midrange. Also, I am hearing some sort of a flanging on the vocals.

funk on!

I think what people are describing about the vocal is just your girlfreinds natural voice.I guess some find it a problem but I see it as the BIGGEST plus in your music. You'll get signed one day because of that high pitched unique voice! You're a good enough musician to know what sounds good and you know your music sounds good.I love those sizzling high sections she hits, especially at 2:03 "Strap on your jet-pack,we gotta go!" Oh yeah. The low harmony your doing under her is perfect.

AL-Cool, I'm glad it grew on you! :) Btw, I did the New York compression on the drums on this one (kick and snare). Thanks for the help on that.

Cyan-Is the weird vocal sound in the chorus as well as the verse?
I know the verse vocal is a bit weird (I think I used the TLM on the verse), but I thought the chorus was more "normal". Thanks a lot.

Kramer- Maybe the squeaky chipmunk is me! I know my voice can be a bit harsh. Thanks a lot, Kramer, really glad you are digging our stuff!

If you want a 50's sci-fi sound get a Theramin or samples from one. That is what they used on a lot of those old movies for the flying saucer sound.

Check out the theme to the movie MarsAttacks! There is a bunch of theramin on there you might be able to 'borrow'.

By squeaky I meant the same thing that several other posters have said - that there seems to be a lot of high end in the lead vocals.

It was the only part of the song that I didn't think was great. I think it was the simply singer's natural singing voice. I saw another post or two from people who liked the sound. So all in all it might not be such a bad thing. It's distinctive if nothing else.

Nice stuff Macle......beautiful as usual. I get kind of an ELO vibe from it. ....from the song and the background vocs. I too, would side with a big thumbs up on the backing vocs. Its unique and fits your pop sensibility. Your stuff is always a treat. You can really hear how much work you put into it.... and I'm always impressed. mike:D

macle,

Great song, maybe a little happier sounding than your others, that's OK, you can be happy!!

Your singing and playing is so tight.

Nothing to complain about.

Great listening!!

TexRoadKill-Yeah a Theramin! I think I may do the intro over. I think I've got a bead on it now. Thanks.

TripleM-Yeah, I new the verse was a bit, uh, badly recorded. Had a really hard time getting a good sound on edgier type singing, especially when it was both of us singing. Went through lots of different mics and compressors and all that, and probably should have redone these, but... just fed up with it! Distinctive distorted squeaky chipmunks, that's our sound! :)

Guernica-Thanks a lot. Glad you like the background vocs and stuff, sometimes I wonder if those are a good idea, because it seems too over the top, and things like that aren't done much. But I guess I like that sort of stuff, where things happen and change. So much music is so dull and repetitive, where nothing ever really happens in the arrangement or the song. Thanks, I really appreciate it!

GT-Happy?! Uh oh, that'll never work! :D Thanks a lot for checking it out.

Macle:

Gotta a huge favor to ask. I am leaving the states in 2 days, and I wanted to burn all you songs on a CD, so I can listen to them in Taiwan(slow slow internet connection at home). So, I was wondering if you can help me to complete my list.
I have: Despair, Hardcore, Joke, Buzz, Future.
I know I am missing Rag. Not sure if I am missing anything else here. IS there anyway you can put up whatever I am missing for like a day or so? It will be great if you could. Thanks

AL

Great production, sound, melodies, lyrics...shit...its just too cool! I'm really dating myself, but your song brings back memories of things like Steve Miller, Bowie, Elton John, a little Beatles/ELO, and a few others. It has that classic 60s/70's sensibility--a groove, real hooks, an intelligent but fun lyric, and so on. Like, when songs still had an element of fun. Maybe some still do, but I digress.

I really like you as an artist. I kept thinking "THIS is what SHOULD be happening on radio now" as I listened. I think theres a hunger for this kind of music that drives a lot of people back to hear older music. Your stuff is fresh but has those classic elements that make lasting music. I hope that record companies wise up soon and that you get a deal.

AL-I had deleted most of the songs from that bloody angelfire site, but I uploaded the ones you're missing last night (just for you!), so I hope you can get them. The site will probably go down though, so.... Maybe you can get them from Kramer! :) Why are you going to Taiwan?

Kramer-I hope you'll still want the CD! ;) (Actually, there's 3 you don't have yet, so...)

sam-Thanks a lot for checking it out. I appreciate it. I've heard about you, too, so I'm gonna check out your new one as soon as I can. Thanks again.
