I still make faces after 19 years of playing. It just happens, & I don't care to stop it. Think of it more as a visual expression of how you're feeling the song. As drummers, we don't get the opportunity to jump around or shake all over the place trying to stop from being sucked into a groove that is just.......too....................deep! My bandmates call these faces "genious moments". They always happen during a fill, or when hitting a solid off-beat accent. My lead guitar and bass players both make the same type of faces during songs. For other examples of the "genious moment", watch John Mayer sing.....hehe

I look to the left as well. At first, I thought it was because my monitor is always on that side, but a friend told me something interesting. He read that drummers do this to point the creative (right) side of the brain out towards everyone else. I'm not sure what it's about much more than that, but if looking to the left helps me be more creative I'll keep doing it!
