When I used to play guitar and bass in a band, our drummer (who was a complete beginner and learned quite well as we played) would make very funny faces during fast, more difficult passages/tunes - because you concentrate too much, you loose your face muscle control :)

I started playing drums with a friend and I find myself doing the same thing (my wife says it's hilarious!).

I really don't mind this, but wondered if anyone else noticed that.

Maybe we should set up cameras and take pictures of ourselves (kinda like they take pictures on death rides at amusement parks)

:D

I think we all do it. I actually have to "pose" so I don't look like a deformed nut when pics are being taken. You really do loose control. Same thing happens with me on guitar. I played guitar in a couple bands and saw a video of us playing...scary to say the least!

I started wearing shades at gigs to keep my eyes from scaring people.
Watch John Bonham in "The song remains the same". Looks like he's speaking in tongues..

Everyone does it when starting out. As vain as it sounds, set up a mirror opposite you so you can watch yourself while you play. It'll train you to know when you're making faces.

yeh im pretty sure i do that too. i always end up looking over my left shoulder at the ground too.

Funny faces are a big part of drumming. Just let yourself go and have fun with it and learn to laugh with others when they make fun of you.

But wait - it gets better :D . Remember all those jokes about drummer's drool? When you really get lost in it you'll find yourself drooling all over the place (especially during really tasty grooves and fills).

(PS- my avatar is one of those funny jammin' faces.)

It's called getting into the music. Every instrumentalist does it, it just depends on if you want to control it or not. When I play my guitar, my mouth is often gaping open, my girlfriend always makes fun of me for it.

yeah i do that too. i don't kno why. it annoys me, lol

Check out the drummer from anti-flag. In every picture he looks constapated. Or look at Santana when he plays, its all part of the music.

another thing to do is use a camcorder. funny faces are funny and can help the act - but sometimes you wanna keep from looking totally stupid :D

How bout after 20 years of playing? Yeah, it's still with me.
I guess Bohnam never caught on either... :D

yup everyones got a drumming face. when im playing a cool jazz or funk groove my mouth gapes open and my head goes forward and backwards, and you know what that looks like right hahahah

two drummer freinds of mine ALWAYS look to their left when they drum, i'm not sure what thats all about

Even if I did, You'd never know it - I wear a leather mask onstage.

I remember seeing pictures of an outdoor show I did about 2 years ago, and man, that was bad...

I always look to the left as well. I think we tend to look wherever our right hand is (if you're right handed), for me anyway. If I'm on the hats, I'm looking left, if I'm on the ride, I'm looking right.

Isn't that just totally odd?. I often notice the Lefty Looker syndrome, especially with bar bands and amatures. Neil Peart does it a lot too! Not that he's an amature, LOL.
I try to make it a point to look into the crowds direction EVEN if I can't see anyone and NEVER look at one spot too long. Just in case you're unknowingly looking at some guys girl! DOH!!
When I started out, my concentration look was puckered lips.YUK!! Talk about corny as hell looking!! Imagine that AND unknowingly looking at some guys girl. Luckily I never had a problem.
