Frustrated... PLEASE help me choose a mic...

It was a step up from the usual question, but unfortunately I missed the bit where he said he was upgrading from an SP B1 (because he didn't say it). In which case, even an SM57 fits the bill for what he wants.
 
If you gather just a little more money, a used AT 4060 might fit your needs. I've seen them on occasion for around $700.
 
Wrap the thing in a towel like old school late night radio guys. It sounds ghetto, but can work at times. Not esoteric and boutique by any means, but perhaps worth a shot.
 
Is it just me or does it seem like Mr. Reichman needs to get laid? If u have such a problem with my posts, then simply don't reply...

Aside from the nonsense... the question I have about a dynamic is: being that i dont have a vocal booth here, will it pickup tons of ambient noise? Am I correct in assuming it will pick up substantially more background sound than a cardoid LDC?

I second the RE-20 or go with the RE-27.

This is a great all around mic and should do wonders with your voice and will not pick up the background noise as much as the regular LC Mics.

Actually, it's the other way around on both counts. Go get laid and then rap into anything and you'll sound better :D , and generally a cardiod dynamic will pick up LESS background noise than a cardiod LDC. Obviously it depends on which specific mics you are comparing, frequency response, sensitivity, self noise etc.

One trick I have seen is to set the mic up in a cupboard full of clothes; this makes for a nifty improvised vocal booth (the clothes soak up background noise).
 
LCDickhead, you mentioned you don't have a vocal booth, I offered a suggestion for that, and you asked whether a dynamic will pick up more background than a condenser and I answered that, all other things being equal, the answer is no. How is that 'remotely' related to what you were after?

You asked a question without providing your starting reference. I pointed this out, but I also suggested a mic that is warm and coloured (ie, what you wanted, despite saying you also wanted it to be universal). People started suggesting dynamics to you, but it sounds like you want a condenser, so you start looking for reasons to downplay dynamics.

As to this childish crap about needing to get laid, I wasn't the one who posted the word 'frustrated' in the subject of this thread.

1. I'm not bothering to take anything you say seriously
2. Your attitude since your first post has already let me know that you're no one worth even paying attention to.

He was right on the fact that most cardiod dynamics pick up less room then most cardiod LDCs would.

Can't we all just get along....

I think this is still good advice. :D I just tracked a Christian Hip hop artist using an AT4050, and it turned out pretty good. Getcha good comp going in, you don't wanna be tracking Rap vocals, or any vocals for that matter, naked! Also, if you read Mr. Reichman's posts closely, he has offered some pretty good tips for ya.

Yeah, I had to put on my boots to sift thru his horseshit, but I do acknowledge the fact that the man knows what he's talking about. He just has zero charisma.... anyways, I appreciate all the suggestions I've received so far. I've asked this questions a few other places and been getting some similar responses so I've been able to narrow my choices down to a few different models. Time for testing!!
 
I think it's kinda weird no one has pointed out that the tube pre is not all that hot of a preamp. A better pre would definately help things. I've had a tube pre, and they're pretty terrible. At the very least I'd suggest putting a new tube in it. I did that and it made it thicker on the low end...still a bit muddy and shrill overall, but really...a new pre might be more beneficial. Maybe an M-Audio dmp3 and a Sennhesier MD-421? That might fit under the radar of your budget, and the 421 is a pretty universal mic.
