Stupid question i know but do you need different bass strings for a frettless.
Also what makes are good and what guadge would you suggest.
p.s. only been playing Bass year and a half and fretless for 1 month.

Cheers

Not a stupid question at all. The short answer is no you don't. However be aware that if you use roundwounds, you're going to cut some grooves into the fretboard. Many people just accept this and have it dressed avery few years. One thing to avoid is string bending; if you want to vibrato, do it like a cello player, by pivoting your whole hand around your fretting finger.

Oh, and slapping is not a good idea :)

As for gauges and brands, you'll just have to experiment. I use Rotosound flatwounds, because I want a deader sound on my fretless, to contrast with the very bright roundwounds on my G&L fretted.

If you haven't found it yet, there's a huge amount of excellent bass stuff on www.talkbass.com.

Ha - you caught me out there fretless :)

Nobody takes any notice of anything I say anyway, so no harm done.

I'd recommend TI Jazz Flats for fretless, but I'm funny that way....
