Hello to you all...

Go now to the http://www.digidesign.com homepage. If you enter some
personal information about yourself, you can download a free protools package..

It works great !

Yes, it is only 2 track. But for the people who are thinking for example a job as soundenigineer in the near future, its the way to try and learn from such a package...

I have worked already with the 24 track pro version.
It cost me almost 2 months to figure out how to record, edit and mix with this most wanted software package !

ive used pt free, and curently use pt le on the 001 and i love both.

pt free is 8 tracks im sure cause ive used all 8.you can only do 2 tracks at a time though.but, it is 8 tracks to set the record straight.

it took me 5 minutes to learn to use pro tools.its laid out like any hardware would be.you just record enable your track the pop up the transport and record.whats great about it is you can that it does everything in 2 windows.
its probably the most intuitive software in existance for what it does.

btw the "real" tdm pro tools is 64 tracks and is powered by special tdm dsp pci cards so you have 0 latency and can use tons of plug ins with no problems, and the plug ins sound better.a tdm setup is $10,000

the 24 track version of pt without the power of tdm dsp
is with the 001 wich can be gotten for $800 and is a steal because the software is great and it has 2 built in pre amps.

i dont know what these other 2 post are saying cause pro tools aint bad for audio, infact its the best(though nuendo is coming on strong)

dont listen to people who put down pt free because they couldnt figure out how to install it.in the pc version there have been bugs, but since i use a mac i aint ever had a problem.and theyve just released a new windows version that fixed some of those bugs.

i dont work for digidesign,in fact i take issue with the fact that their product line jumps from $800 to$10,000
and that theyre asio drivers make cubase run poorly on it.they need more product scalability.

i just couldnt let such blatant mis information go by.
pro tools is easy to use, and pro tools free has 8 tracks.

alright, then genius, tell me how pro tools is the best, cus I say its not. My contention is that anything with dedicated hardware will be forever behind the upgrade curve, making it cool now, suck later. Kinda like macs.. they compete for about five minutes, then AMD releases a chip that blows them away. I can just slip the new chip in.. presto! wheras you need a whole new g5.

ANYWAY, I hear this as the argument for pro tools...'its the best because so and so used it'.
Wheras I think youd have a better record if you spent $500 on vegas and $9,500 on outboard gear, like mics and instruments and preamps and shite, than if you spent $10,000 on protools.

and pro toos free?? what a fucking joke that is. Digis just feeling threatened by all the totally killer software out there, so there trying to get some market share. Why would I want a 2-at a time 8 track?? ever?

xoxo

my mac works great.its just a pleasure to operate.

as for pro tools.i think nuendo could kick theyre tail.im sure you know of moores law.positive feedback loop?
why do you need dsp cards when your cpu can be hal?

i use the 001,not the $10,000 tdm.and imho its better for audio than anything in the pricerange.for $800 i great software, 24-bit 8/8 analog,8/8 spdif, midi io and 2 mic pre's with phantom power.the downside to pro tools is its midi is scimpy.thats where logic enters the fray.and, all this works off my cpu.voila.

all im saying is this.

pro tools is easy to use.its the easiest piece of software i own

and pro tools free definately has 8 tracks, not 2

you can tell me why macs suck, and why tdm is over priced and thatll be good for you.next year digidesign is bringing out new dsp cards.

not only that, but pt 5.1 will allow tdmers to use the cpu
for their plugs as well.the best of both worlds.

cmon,if you had the $$$ wouldnt you want the best hardware?i know youd say yes. but i also agree with you.im not getting that $10,000 crap.i need mics and pre's etc.

and pt. free is free.so why complain about it.
dont buy this bulletin boards hype theyre gettin a little payola to hype these softs.i used pt free until i could afford a 001 wich i thought was a great deal considering it comes with 2 pre's.

Pro Tools Free

I'd love to try the PT Free version or any PT version for that matter, but I foolishly bought an over the counter pc with an AMD K-6 and ESS Solo soundcard, both of which are not compatible with Pro Tools, then learned about digital recording! Since I don't have PT, I make due with Cakewalk and CEP. Can anyone recommend a good one or two channel mic/instrument preamp (hey! only an idiot would spend thousands on this stuff unless theyr'e making a living at it). Also, what is the best cardioid condenser mic for vocals/instrument under $400? Should I just ditch this pc for a G4?

I think digidesign has a covert operation goin on here.

if you want to do pro tools id reccomend using a mac.
otherwise it depends what your comfortable with.

joe meek, pre sonus, and focusrite have some cool preamps at different price levels.expect to spend$150 + per channel at minimum, unless you want to get a mackie and use its pre's

for a cheap mic check out the rode nt-1.also im guessing the model number but ive heard the audio technica 4067(?) is great

pro tools is skimpy on the midi.also, the only other audio sofware that works really good with the 001 is logic.dont say i didnt warn you of this...cause it pissed me off.

I like logic...the first edition of pro tools free did not work for me..I mean it is free ,how good could it be?

And I heard nothing but complaints from people who tried to get it going on their pcs.

And this is a Cool Edit forum, not protools.

Aside from that, yeah, it's free and it does 8 tracks, 2 at a time.

well, i went to the digidesign site to d-load the free protools. filled out all that crap and the page is not even working.anybody got any ideas?thanks

Hey, no doubt if you’ve got thousands to burn and need to do audio/video sync work and can go out and buy one of those nice new Mac Cubes (btw, has anybody heard those things run—dead silent—no fan!), then by all means get the full out version of PT.

But it just ain’t realistic for most of us. Also, I too have heard nothing but bad reports about the free 8-track “PC” version of this. In fact I heard they pulled from the market because it just had too many bugs at this point. That might be why jwgeetar didn’t get to the download page…at least that’s my guess.

I ain’t knocking it…really, anything free in life is okay by me, but it looks like they got a ways to go yet in the design of the freebee version for PC owners.

BTW, I wish Syntrillium would think about coming out with a scaled down version of CEP with less tracks for less money. Right now I use Cakewalk because it’s affordable and has real-time effects and use CE 2000 for editing. Actually, I have the 4-track plug-in for it too and often do solo acoustic guitar things with that and it comes in handy for crossfades. Still, what I really need is a cheap 16-track version of CEP with real-time effects for say, umm, a hundred bucks? I don’t even need any funky midi with it. Real musicians don’t need it and I’ll never understand how any band worth spit needs more than 16 tracks especially given the fact that digital audio generally means “stereo” tracks which is more like 32 then! Maybe 64 is great for video and folley work but otherwise…what a waste. Just give me a good, working 16 audio tracks, with real-time effects and all the editing features we love so much about this product, and keep the overkill for the chumps who need it.

exactly windowman, thats what i mean't. the 16 audio tracks and the real fun da mental stuff.why can't digital get together in an analog mode?

Why indeed jwgeetar. Actually, CAkewalk's not a bad deal. It's easy to use and if you spend 50 bucks on the 8-track version of CW Guitar Tracks2, you can upgrade to the 16 track version of CW Guitar Studio for only an additional $70. You also get 256 tracks of midi and I think 16 simultanious effects in real time. It doesn't have the editing features of CE2000 though, nor the ability to save in tons of different formats ect. You can still do pretty much everything you want as long as you have CE2000 to do the editing but then that means going in and out of 2 different programs which is a little more time consuming.

And also, CakeWalk tends to freeze up a lot more than CE. In fact, CE has never once locked up on me! I love it! I just wish they had 16-track Pro version for normal people. Besides, after you spend 120 dollars on CW you still need to spend another $50 on CE2000 to be able to edit. So now we're up around $200. I'd much rather have a 16 track version of CE Pro to begin with at that $100 dollar price I keep dreaming about. At least I have my dreams....

I Prefer the audio engine in pro tools to cool edits.Pro tools just give a fuller sound. It's subtle but not that subtle.

16 tracks may be enough for you, but when recording an ensemble of musicians I could almost use 16 tracks just on the drums;)

thats why I love Cool Edit PRO. It has 64 tracks!

oxxo

ps, can we ditch this thread please?:)

Hmm, well, I’ve been doing this a good 19 years now, since my early 20’s and the only recordings I ever hear that have more than 16 tracks always, and I mean ALWAYS, have that over-produced sound to them—“Boston” rings a bell.

16 tracks for drums? All you need is a nice reflective mid-sized room, and 2 overheads, a kick, and snare will do perfectly. In fact, if you try to put more than that on a quality jazz drummer, he’ll baulk at it every time if he’s been in the biz a while.

To each his own I guess.

real human players is "exactly" where it's at. as far as me being a songwriter any way.thats the way i recorded my 45 singles in the early eighties. also my 2 albums in the 90's.

now don't get me wrong on this, but i no longer have the funds, to go in a studio and do what i want with real humans. since i record my songwriting on computers, i need "DRUMS"! i need to figure out how to program either a drum machine or drum software to my songs.(of course re-record my guitars & all when i get the drums down)

i wish there was an easier way to learn drum programming.
i bought Blue Box from Steinberg and it or me is all Greek.(i'm actually irish).

this is all ironic since i am a pc support tech in my real job. i hear rhythmns, but can't key them in--if ya know what i mean. anybody got any links to real tutorial's about drum learning software or machines? thanks!
