It's Too Funky in Here!!!
Catch my new COVER, "Moonage Daydream", song by David Bowie.

http://www.nowereradio.com/davemania/singles

This was my attempt at the "1.5 Project", and yeah, it took me about 1.5 days from idea to mp3. Sure, it's not perfect, but for me it's pretty good. Hope you think so too.

"Moonage Daydream", 1/11/03

Anyway, listen up & cheers. Thanx!;)

Davemania is in the house! :D

The mix is a little too full of low-mids and upper-bass so it makes it a little muddy sounding.

But the main thing I'd like to say is that it's cool to see someone who obviously has fun doing this. After all, that's what it's supposed to be...........fun......and a lot of us lose sight of that. Put me down for the next Davemania CD please. :)

cool listen Reel! I never heard the original, but sounds like a good tune..

tascam 388? Isnt' that the 8 track 1/4" multitrack unit.. pre-cursor to the portastudio? i've always wanted to use one of those. how good is the mixer section?

...

Blue Bear- corrected the link, thanx for listening.

dtb- Fun, you bet. I'll be over on Weds nite. Thx.

jamal- if you read the fine print, it says about 8 hours to record, and maybe 8 hours to mix. It's 1.5 that got me motivated to begin with, but the session went much longer than that. This song is supposed to have lots of feeling. Some parts are a little dissonant, and that's okay. I'll save the slick version for the remake. Thanx.

Guernica- Yeah man, it's a way cool fun cover from the 70's. Notice I put the cymbal hit on every 8th count? That's drum-nazi-like, isn't it? ;)Thanx.;)

Lt. Bob- Yeah man, cool. I really had fun doing this one, that's for darn sure. I do it all for fun, it's true, and no one can take that away from me. I was going for a full bodied bass sound on this one. I could possibly do a remix or a little tidying up of the basic tracks, as yet tbd. I already began rerecording some tracks on this one, because there are some flaws I want to address, but I think I fucked it up by erasing the click track, and may have to rerecord this one from scratch. We'll see about fixing this song a little, or maybe rerecord it, and I'll be sure to get you in on the next cd release, whenever it may be. Thanx!

B.Sabbath- Yeah, it's a crazy cool song from the album "Ziggy Stardust", with lots of the drama that 70's music is famous for. It's a fun and challenging song to play. I may work on it further, as yet tbd.

JR- Yeah, the 388,... well,... it is what you think, but it's not the precursor to the Portastudio. The Portastudio line was already established when the 388 was designed, but it was Tascam's only reel-8 track Portastudio ever, and Tascam's only 1/4" 8-track. They wouldn't dare call it a "Portastudio", being so damn heavy, so the named it the "Studio 8". Yeah man, the 388 is a great unit, with a primo 8x8x2 mixer with 3-band parametric EQ, 2 effects sends and tons of I/O. The recorder can record up to 8 simultaneously. The 388 is a great unit. I like using mine a lot.

All you guys, thanx for listening!;)

Drum nazi here.:D Can't listen at work but I'll be back tonight (and it better be good. We haff vays off dealing vis you people).

Can't listen at work?

Dude, you need a better job!;)

As I said above, the present mix stands as it is for now, but I'm endeavoring to clean up the recording by rerecording some the tracks. There's a reworking of this song that I want to do, that's tantamount to rerecording the whole thing, especially since I erased the basic click track, and am having trouble patching up this present recording. I f'd up the bass track too, so it needs to be redone also.

See what I get for not leaving well enough alone? Haha.

Regarding song re-work: I may do a 'backward masking' of a click track, tagging it to the very start of the song,... the intro being the most difficult part to get right without a click. Otherwise, if time & energy permits, I may rerecord this song entirely from scratch or record something new, as yet TBD.

For me, it's one step at a time, and it doesn't pay to be overly ambitious. I'm glad if I can get one thing done at a time!;)

God that brings back memories. Good choice Dave. It tightens up a lot after the first lead. The lead going out is down right cool. Oh, and the drums, TURN 'EM UP.:D :D :D

Thanx Track Rat!

Yeah man, it brings back memories for me too,... like,... yesterday!

I don't think a remix is feasible now, 'cause I'm messin' with the tracks, attempting to do a reworking of the basic tracks.

Moral of this story:

1) Don't erase your click track until the very last, and then only if absolutely necessary. Having erased the click track is making it a bitch to go back and rework the tracks.

2) Don't press any button in haste,... since I fat-fingered from track 4 accidentally to track 5, and corrupted a perfectly good bass line. That's another track that will need to be redone.

-

I'll probably bang at this song some more, or possibly rerecord it entirely, until I've either fixed it, or run out of energy and inspiration,... whichever comes first.

-

Thanx for listening!

wham bam thank you ma'am....

actually, it sounds like a bowie demo basement tape.

Wham bam, thank you ma'am! You got that right!

I'm setting up mics again, as we speak. I think these tracks can be salvaged. I'll work on that, and possibly something new.

Thanx for the listen!;)

Let me *correct* something I said previously...

The Tascam 388 is the 1/4", 7.5ips, dbx, 7"-reel-8-track-Portastudio-like "Studio 8", one of Tascam's finest designs [IMO].

The 388's integrated 8x8x2 mixer has 8 XLR mic inputs, 1/4" line ins, Access-Send/Rcv, Tape Outs, 2 Aux Sends, [two full aux sends, not some either/or aux send like on the FD4/FD8], and has *3-band-SWEEPABLE-EQ*. [Not having Q, it's not fully Parametric.] There's a full complement of 8 PGM-IN/OUTs, and main stereo outputs have RCA and XLR/BAL/UNBAL, [switchable]. Tape transport records 8-simul.

The 388's cool looking, sounds good, and is fun to use.
