Hi everybody. My name is David Toy and I used to occasionally post here. I'm in a band called Franny Glass now and we've just made a new recording called "Rita Tried" which I think is our best sounding song yet (recording quality and mix-wise, anyway). It was recorded on a Tascam 2488. We would really appreciate any comments.

(the song is at the top of the page)

Thanks,
David

It sounds like it is a recording of a rehearsal that went pretty well, and that's what it is, right?

It just doesn't really sound mixed, let alone mastered. Now for the constructive comments:
- Voice is not upfront enough. It should be drawing the main attention, the drums are doing that now.
- Everything sounds far away. If you recorded this with 1 or 2 mics to catch the sound of the entire band, try using source micing. Try putting mics right up to the grills of the guitar amps. Bass can go direct into the console. That should make it alot more in-your-face.

Now the comments on the song itself:
It's ok, but that's totally it. It doesn't give me many emotions, bad ones, or good ones. To me, music should touch me, and even if you find someone who really likes this kind of music, I still think even they will not be touched, because it does not sound like you really wanna impress someone (especially concerning the vocals, no feeling at all, it almost sounds like the singers are thinking "do I have to sing this?")

For the rest, good job :)

This wasn't recorded "live". It was pieced together an instrument at a time... The guitars and bass were all recorded direct (no mics). It is still a home recording though so I know it's not going to sound professional. Thanks for listening and for your comments, though.

Why? It's not like I have a recording studio or anything. I only have a few inexpensive microphones and going direct seemed to get a decent sound so I went with it.

I liked the wierd vocal harmonies.
And the little drum fill was nifty too.
And thats about all i liked.
But thats a preference thing.

So..the recording...
What else can i say?

It sounds ALOT like a demo.
The production does zero justice to the potential of the song.
I call that a good attempt at home recording, but overall a loss in sonic charater, and fidelity.

I just did a bit of "mastering" in Soundforge and re-uploaded it. I don't know if it sounds any better or not.. it's louder anyway.

Yep. Its louder.

I always know someone didnt like my band at a live show when i hear---
"wow you guys are really loud" after the set is over. :o
