I heard a tune from that album yesterday on the radio. And now I'm wondering, did they do any studio overdubs on that record? I don't have the record anymore, so I can't read the credits. Anyone remember/know?

come on, someone's gotta know... it's the top selling live album of all time!

From the sleeve;

Recorded at Winterland, San Francisco, Marin Civic Centre, San Rafael, California.
Island Music Centre, Commack, Long Island, New York, State University of NY at Plattsburgh, Wally Heider's Mobile Recording Truck, California and the Fedco Recording Truck, NY.

(Live Recording) Engineers; Ray Thompson, Chris Kimsey and Eddie Kramer.........blah blah.

Remixed at Electric Lady Studios, NY by Chris Kimsey and Peter Frampton.
Mastered at the Mastering Lab, Los Angeles by Mike Reese.

Apart from the "Live Recording" comment, there is no reference to how the recording was done, although that could be taken to imply that some studio work was on the album.

:cool:

I know one thing that was overdubbed was audience and crowd noise to make it sound like there were many more people in attendance than there actually were...

Back at the time they were recording frampton comes alive, he was not nearly as popular then as he is now, and so it was necessary to add in the crowd noise or else there would be very little.

but as far as overdubbing the actualy music, I haven't a clue.

I thought I had heard that the crowd was "doctored" a bit. Makes you wonder about the rest. I don't give a rip one way or the other-aesthetically, but if they did overdub, I think they did a great job of making it sound natural. Titan

If Eddie Kramer was involved,Yes. Because in last years interveiw in home recording, he stated the only time he had used a live vocal on a live record was on "The Song Remains the same" for Led Zeppelin.

I remember reading recently (wish I could remember where though!) that "Comes Alive" as were most so-called "live" albums in the 70s/80s, was almost entirely overdubbed.........

This doesn't necessarily imply for performance reasons (although I'm sure there were clams to fix!), but certainly for sound quality issues...
