Here's an original song that was written and performed by the nephew of our own 60's Guy (Randy) that was sent to me with a collection of Randy's songs shortly after JamFest. This one was recorded as a solo acoustic song at Randy's studio. The song is called "Frame" by Jameson Nordberg, who is presently serving our country with honor and pride with military service in Afghanistan.

I posted the original solo version by Jameson first, and then the new version with the tracks we recently recorded. Jameson has a great voice and this is a great song. This isn't a final mix, but I just wanted to get it out there to see what you guys think. Thanx to Randy and Jameson for the fine job and the permission to play on this song.

Listening now -

Sounds great overall. Only nit is the kick - it's almost non-exisitant.

From an artistic standpoint, I think the elec guit needs something diffrent. Maybe panned with a delay to the opp side? I dunno, but it seems to be trying to crowd into the middle too much.

Great job!

Sounding pretty good Buck...nice additions to this tune. Could probably use a bit more kick, as NL pointed out, but it's coming along well. Just barely hearing your backing vocal is pretty cool. It really adds some depth, without sticking out at all. Nice job there. I like what you and Bob did.

This is a cool song! Jameson's got a very good voice. Buck, your additions only added to it. Good flavoring overall. I'm sure you'll smooth out the final mix and I can't wait to hear it. I don't know what part of Chicago you're in, but I have a good friend in Skokie that I could totally see you recording with. He's got a nice setup too...and he's also a multi-instrumentalist. You guys would have a ball. He's the main sound guy for the Milennium Park shows and most big shows there. You might already know him!

Anyway...great job on the song. Keep it up!

What's the hiss i one ear? Is it reverb? It's really annoying.
The song & playing are really good.
The intro was a little long without using any dynamics to create expectation though.

Thanx for the comments and compliments. :)

We added some more thump to the bass drum and it does sound significantly better. :)

We tried panning the guitar every which way you can think and it just doesn't work with everything else. I mean, it just doesn't sound as tight or nearly as good as where it sits right now, which is presently at 27%. Panning it out further might make for better dynamics (in theory), but it creates other issues that would require re-editing and remixing, etc, etc, etc. The new mix is probably not the final one, but it's close.

I'll post the new mix when I get home tonight, since I have to leave for work right now.

Thanx again, guys. :)

Good ears! It's possible you might be hearing the phase sound in the vocal track. If you listened to the original version it has a reverb and a phase thing going on. The two vocal tracks we received were minus the reverb, but the phase sound was still present, especially when we had both vocal tracks playing. To eliminate some of it we used only one of the vocal tracks instead of two, but you may be hearing some of the leftover effect that we couldn't completely eliminate.

Well, this is a collaboration. We didn't want to chop up what Jameson Nordberg (the writer/performer) originally intended. So we worked with *exactly* what was given to us. Could it be shortened? Perhaps... but the purpose of this collaboration was to take what was there and build on it, not slice, dice or mutilate it.

That's why it was so much fun to do this. Kudos to Jameson Nordberg for penning such a great song. And thanx for the compliment on the playing. Not all of it was perfect, but that's what editing is for. :D:D

Anyhoo, we did a remix and I posted it.

I'm impressed. Very cool tune. I like the Cindy Lauper segue at the end.

Nice job, Buck and Bob. Drums are punchier this go round, and the acoustic seems to sound a bit nicer. Very good mix on the vocal also. Seems to have a more even sound with all the new stuff added.

Nice job guys.

Great job Buck & Bob! :)

When I recorded Jamie he mentioned when he played the tune for his partner for the first time, his partner said that the tune had a Cindy Lauper thingy goin' on. He threw it in at the end just for laughs, so I left it in.

Thanx Randy, we couldn't have done it without you. :)

Let's just hope Cyndi Lauper doesn't hear it and sue us for that little snippet.

Then again, we got nothing to sue for... just lots of debt! :p:p:p

Buck,

It is I who thanks you and Bob for what the two of you have done with Frame.

I'm the middle of composing a letter to Jamie and packaging a box with a disc of Frame and a few other discs. I'll be enclosing pictures taken at Jamfest and a Jamfest hat for him along with a few goodies that he has requested to give to the young children where he is stationed in Afghanistan.

I can't possibly thank you enough, Buck.

Tell Bob that his Jamfest hat is being boxed up on will be on its way. ;)

You guys are the greatest!

Thnx!!!!!!!!!! :)

I'm surprised nobody has asked how we mic'd the drums, bass, guitar, etc.

Here's what we used...

Drums:
4 - SM57's (snare and toms)
1 - Audio Technica DR2000 (kick)
1 - Rode NT3 (hi-hat)
1 - AKG C3000 (single overhead)

Bass:
Epiphone Thunderbird (direct) into an ART Dual MP preamp

Electric Guitar:
Epiphone Firebird Studio (direct) into a Digitech RP200

Recorded with Sonar 4 - Producer's Edition
