I think your budget is right around $550... that's what I think

Youll get way lower possible latency with the MOTU

well my lock box in my room has 570 dollars in it
Do you need eight pres? or would you be better suited to one good pre?

To cut to the chase... what are you doing? Solo project work? band in studio? live? Why eight pres out of the blue? Would a mixer be more appropriate? It's all in the details... of which we have none.

Personally... between tha two choices... I'd go the MOTU route... if in fact that's the route you choose...

Welcome to the board...

Agreed. At low latency settings, the MOTU is less likely to cough up a hairball. My FIREPOD took a lot of CPU power to keep running (spiking), while the MOTU pretty much sat at or near the zero mark. Part of that spiking, of course, is an artifact of measurement granularity, but even still, at low latency settings, I have noticed better reliability with two MOTU 8Pre interfaces together even in comparison with a single FIREPOD....

YMMV, of course.

Another option is the new Presonus Firestudio Project. This has upgraded A/D D/A converters over the existing Firestudio and has the XMAX preamps.
This would be my choice!

Or you could go the route of the EMU 1212M + M-Audio Octane! $119 + $488

4dB more an the DAC side and 7dB more on the ADC side, Thats not alot, and the big boy Firestudio has XMAX preamps and way more routing capabilities....
26 IO vs 10 IO basically the Firestudio project is a glorified FP10, no word clock, no ADAT lightpipe you get what I mean.

Also, I own two Firestudio's, the 26 IO model. so Im not dogging Presonus

The Firestudio Project also has XMAX preamps. I'm not saying the converters are a quantum leap above the original Firestudio but a slight upgrade. If I was looking for an 8 pre audio interface this would be my personal choice as I don't need all the other features the original Firestudio has.

I agree, I needed all the extras, and the other one for mobile recording..:D

does the 8pre include software i know it says some cue line mixer or something but can i record with that?

I have the focusrite saffire pro 26i/o
another possible option!!!!
