Has anyone here used these? ZZounds has them for $99.95. Looks like a clearance. The price is sure right. I was wondering if they're any good. Thanks

Yeah...I was checkin them out too. Sam Ash has em for the same price. I'm not too impressed with the frequency response, but whaddaya want for $100!

Monitors are my next purchase, but they will not be anything expensive. I might have to check these out.
My computer speakers just don't do the trick. They are Creatives and have two satellite speakers and a sub. They sound great but are not too great for monitoring.
Has anyone seen the Sony bookshelf speakers that look identical to reference monitors?

I've used them

I've used the PS3.1 monitors. They are okay. Not bad for the price. A bit bassy, but once you get used to them they aren't bad. They are worth it for the price.

Wouldn't it be bad to mix with monitors that have a subwoofer attached? It seems like you might pull the low end back a little further than you would normally because the monitors are so generous with it. Just guessing.

Have you seen how small the PS3.1 monitors are?? If you didn't have the sub woofer there would be no bass at all. Besides, the sub woofer has a volume level on it that's seperate from the monitors. After playing with them for a bit you can find the right balance.

thats true, thats true.

so what is the difference between this set of monitors and computer speakers with a sub? I actually think my logitech (w/ sub) computer speakers would do a better job.

I see that Musicians Friend has these for $79.95. I think I might go for it. Thanks

antone,
It might be too late, but I've been all over this board looking for recommendations for inexpensive monitors and I've come up with one set that everyone always recommends and I've never heard anything bad about. They are Yorkville YSMs. They come active and passive. Do a search for them.

Forget that I said this. If you are like me you can't afford $429 for these.
I will tell you this, the fostex monitors you are talking about w/sub will probably not do a better job than the creative computer speakers that I have for $40. It's just my opinion, but I don't want a subwoofer on something that am mixing with. Just adds to much bass to mix accurately with.

Right now, the best cheap near field monitors are the m-audio sp5 b's. At only $199 that is as good as it gets right now. They do the job but are nothing to get excited about. I've had mine for about 6 weeks, they are at the very least a serious upgrade from computer monitors.

I've wondered about the Edirols myself. Go over to the mixing and mastering forum and they will laugh us right off the board for even talking about anything under $500. All those guys must be single, no kids, have high-paying jobs, and live with their parents. I've thought very serious about getting something like the Edirols or at the most the M-Audios.
Someone over on the M and M forum did say that there were some Tannoys that were being closed out at $169 a pair, but when I clicked on the link it said they were no longer in stock. Figures.

Edirols

I know basically nothing about what makes monitors good or not, but I have the Edirol ma-10ds, and they sound great. When I mix something on them it comes out sounding good on a big church sound system or on a little boombox. I'm sure they're not as good as the $5000 jobbies, but they make noise.

gospel, that one got a giggle or two... :)

Thanks alot. I just might have to get some. I'm sure they would be an upgrade from my Creative computer speakers.

Yeah, I used to do mixdown in my video editing software on my computer speakers - the results were never very good when heard anywhere else. So I guess if that's what monitors are for, the Edirols do a decent job.

I went to Guitar Center to play on my drum set and while I was there I was going to pickup those digital Edirols. But come to find out, they didn't carry them at that particular store. Anyone have any idea why? Does GC not carry any Edirol products?

I always heard that GC and MF are the same company. MF has them on their site?

yeah, i know. that's why i ask. Why does MF have them and not GC? I'm calling sam ash.
