Hi all,

Well managed to get one of these on a try before you buy basis. I have a great music shop near me :)

Had a quick play around last night and have a couple of questions :

1. Are there are EQ options on the channels ?

2. The inputs seem to be very low and I have to turn the gains almost to max to get decent volume ?

I am using some Yamaha MSP3 powered speakers (20w) very nice.

Seems fairly easy to use although shame there are no build in drums/percussion :(

I also have a Zoom PS02 and am using this as a reference. This is my first full size (well compared to the Zoom) recording setup.

I guess I could use the Zoom to put in the drum track.

Yeah,
There some things that the mr8 "should" have.....but then again that would throw it into the "more expensive" category, where Fostex already has a line of products to choose from. Most of us use mixers, preamps, and whatnot that we already had. The mr8 just jumped right in there and performed like it was supposed to. My suggestion to you is to go ahead and purchase an inexpensive mixer with a preamp....it just makes it so much easier. Check out the Behringer UB line of mixers, although a lot of people on this BBS won't agree with me, the one I have has performed flawlessly.

Just to add a little to what works with the MR-8. I am getting good levels using a Shure beta 58 hooked straight into the MR-8. This is with the trim turned approx. 3/4 of the up. If I turn it up anymore it clips. This is recording vocals.

Thanks guys. I am also hoping to get a zoom MRS-1044 to try as well. I know it is more but does have some of the features I listed above. It's also come down in price :)

No eq, true. but somehow i'm not needing it at the moment. Sm-57 i did ok w/ levels, but yes, a little low. But you can boost w/out much noise when you bounce and use the mastering fx.

I got a preamp (single channel) for distant mic, but also still use the sm57 w/ trim pot maxed and close mic'd less than a foot from vocal.

i can slide the faders up almost all the way and it's still ok. it doesn't seem to overload the circuit or anything and gives more boost.

also, don't worry about the distortion you hear in the headphones, it does't show up on the recording or the output, it's just a crappy amp in there. If it bugs ya, turn 'em down. i record w/ only one on, or none, once i set levels...

eq would't fit on the small box ;) but also, most eq on cheap little mixers sucks anyway. when i've had it, i used it very little, mostly not at all. so i don't really miss it. of course, i'm only doing demo quality solo acoustic w/ one vocal. so you may want to eq thru pc software, or outboard if you got it.

Hi again,

Thanks but I have taken the Fostex back and have decided to stick with my PS-02 as scatch pad and then use my PC and N-Track Studio to lay down complete songs.

It's a nice red looking box though ;)
