Fostex M88RP

I've seen one of these for sale around town and I'm wondering what folks here think of 'em... basically a ribbon mic design but supposedly more rugged than most ribbons and doesn't require phantom power. Anybody use one?
 
bumpity, bumpity, bump.

How about any of the Fostex printed ribbon mics... anybody used 'em? Are they the real deal?
 
Haven't used on, but just a comment - ribbons don't use phantom voltage. They require lots of clean preamplification (due to their low output), but not phantom voltage. In fact, if you turn on the phantom voltage on a mic pre that has s typical ribbon mic connected to it, you'll damage the ribbon.

Just to follow up... I bought the mic. It sounds downright bitch'en on a guitar cab. I just finished recording a song with about four or five guitar parts, all recorded through the M88RP and it beats anything I've recorded before with dynamics or condensers all to hell, for electric guitars at least.

No problem with getting enough gain from my Mindprint pre... everything clean as a whistle. Of course it's shy on the top end, but I came up with a contour for my plug-in EQ that I saved as a preset, one that's basically a bit of top boost and slight dip in the mids. The guitar parts sit right in the mix and sound *real*... like you're "there".

Badda-bing, badda-boom. My new "go-to" electric geetar mic, fer sure.
 
Congrats! Glad it's working out so well. Was it a pretty expensive mic? It looks like it might be more than the typical "cost effective" ribbon...
 
$325 plus tax. It didn't have the original case, so they threw in a Samson case and I trimmed the foam for a good fit. They said the guy who traded it in used to work for Fostex back in the day and got this one when it came out (about 1975). The mic looked like it had never been used, like brand spanking new. It's got a cool swivel-mount that detaches from the mic body and the swivel-mount has its own built-in XLR cable. Cool stuff, well built.
