I've just got hold of a fostex 280 and when switching on it makes a rather loud humming noise. I inserted a cassette (chrome type II as recommended) to test the tape transport functions. The rewind was extremely slow even with high speed switch selected. And when pressing the play button it would not move and switched off automatically from play within a few seconds. I tried another tape and it seems to rewind and fast forward faster but still not play. i.e. no movement in the tape transport switching itself off again.
Any thoughts gents? Faulty unit or faulty tapes? I'm guessing it should at least move the tape if not faulty. The loud humming noise is also concerning. Would this be picked up in the recording process
Sounds to me like the main drive belt has failed, come off and likely wrapped itself around the main motor shaft & pulley, which causes the humming noise caus the motor's jammed. Best to not play with it more til you've looked under the covers, lest you burn the motor out!!
