For starters, on our LS-9 - 16, this drive worked fine. Then, someone had saved a file from another source. Now, I get an "Illegal storage format" error message. The user's manual does not go into detail on how to correct this.

When I plugged this drive into my PC, it shows it is formatted in FAT 32. The book says it should be FAT 16. I tried to format it in FAT 16 with no success. I used the option, on my PC, to change it to ALLOCATION DEFAULT. This dosen't work either.

Is there something I need to do to get this drive to work on our LS-9?

FAT 16 (also commonly refereed to as just FAT) is the file system used by PCs back in the dead dark ages of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1, when a decent sized hard drive was 40 megs - note I said MEGS, not GIGS. I have no idea why anything today would still be using it.

FAT32 goes back to the days of Windows 95 and 98. Most flash drives - at least those 2 gigs and under - still seem to come formated that way. Probably because Macs as well as PCs can read FAT 32, while the newer PC file system - NTFS - can only be read by Macs with the use of third-party software. Or so I am told (I don't use a Mac).

If your hardware REALLY insists on Fat 16, you can still format it that way on a PC (at least in Windows XP). Open a command line on your PC and type Format /? and it will give you all the info you need.

I'm on vista and when I right click a storage device there's an option "Format". Click it and you have a bunch of options. I don't know if that's what you did or not though.

I'm also on Vista. I have tried all the options, and still get "ILLEGAL STORAGE FORMAT" on the LS-9 - and no place to go from there.

Have a look here, it looks like you just format the stick with the LS9.

Also found this.
