For rapping or just listening?

I was just wondering about anyone making beats that weren't meant to be rhymed over.Is it a common practice and would you buy a cd full of beats with no lyrics just to ride and relax to?

Yeah, sometimes I make beats just to listen to. When I'm making a beat and I notice that It's not really the rapper's style, but I like it anyway. I finish it any how.

I have notice that when I make a beat that maybe not to the rapper's taste or style. I learn how to put that type of style down and grow as a Beat Maker/Producer.

And as to buying just beats to listen to. Yeah I have in the past. Sometimes I would rather just hear the instrumental.

I think this is what separates the beat maker from the average person. As a beat maker, you learn to appreciate how the music was made and figure out what's in each beat that makes it unique in comparison to others.

Listening to other people's beats helps me grow and learn new tricks when I make my own.

Maybe it could be a new genre of hip hop.I am influenced by a lot of jazz and I do like instrumentals more. hmmm Ridin music? or something

Somtimes you will find instrumentals on hip-hop/rap albums, I believe made to have no vocals to em.., I know it was a soundtrack, but Stanley Clark's instrumental from "Boys In The Hood" was one of the sickest instrumentations I've ever heard, well, back in the day it was.. Not a fan of it, but techno gets away with it.. I agree with dude, making a beat for Hip-Hop intended for no vocals is a different approach, and if done right, a very artistic on at that!

Making production albums is nothing new. There's a very small market for it.

but yeah its nothing really new..a few people do like the ones mentioned before i posted..but like change said its a (very)small market for it..

Yeah, sometimes when Im bored or get stuck on a beat, I'll make shit that isnt meant to be rhymed to. Ends up having like a 2 minute intro, quiter drums etc..

And yes, I own a few instrumental cds, that are just beats.
"Dead Ringer" by RJD2 is one of my favorites.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned DJ Shadow. His cd's (Endtroducing, and The Private Press) are filled with hip hop instrumentals. He does have a bunch of songs with vocals, but a lot of times they're samples and not dudes rhyming over his beats. He's good.

Either way.. A lot of the good instrumentals end up as interludes... Example: The tail end of the first track on Nas' "I Am".... I love that one...
