Wow.. thank oyu so much. That article helped me out alot... I'm debating between getting the Tascam 488 or a 4 track portastudio. I'm leaning toward the portastudio for money reasons.. that way i can still afford a couple of Shure 57's..... any thoughts or suggestions???? THANKS!

Good one Proveras - well worth a read if you are starting out, and don't forget to do a search here at HR on any questions you may have - there is a vast library of info just awaiting your search. Like if you've got a Tascam 488, do a search on that first.

cheers
John :)

There's a really useful overview of hard disk recorders in the September/October edition of Performing Songwriter. Different types, their features described, examples. As the writer says: "Hard disk recording is the standard today, and will continue to be for some time."

*Plus!* interviews with Macy Gray and Lou Reed! Macy's cute. Lou's not.

Tascam

The Tascam 488 *is* a Portastudio, it's just 8 tracks. Me, I like having more than enough. I had a 424MKIII (4 track) at first, then I sold it for a 688 (8 track) cause I could not deal mentally with having only 4 tracks. The 688 is simply amazing. If you don't mind spending about $500 or so, get one. You can only buy them used (hello eBay!), but that doesn't mean they'll be in crap condition. Just use smart buying techniques. These units retailed for $3000+ when they were first released (1989?), so $500 is a dream. Check it out.

I agree. I love my 688. And I know I've already said this a million times, but get this: it cost me $350 shipped. How sweet is that? It works perfectly. I am using it to record an album.. Of course the reason it sounds so great is because I get to work with 4 freakishly talented people, but it's nice to have the 688 to preserve and reproduce the great great sounds they make. :)
