Hey Cellardweller & Rvdsm...

I'm from 'round your parts (outside Peoria, IL). I worked at the Madison Theatre for almost 10 years as the audio tech (audio slave)/ monitor engineer, before they closed it recently for live music. It's now exclusively a comedy club, which sucks, 'cause it was probably the best "theatre type" ( approx.1200 cap.) venue in Central IL. This place sounded great! Anyway, I'm setting up a recording studio in the area (actually Canton) and would love to talk to musically minded people from our area.
Email me at the address below if you'd like to chat..."Now back to our regularly scheduled program..." :)

What Jimbo was talking about (preamp vs. power amp distortion) is definitely right on the mark. Also the comment about using two different pedals to achieve a "blend" of the 2 is also a great idea...maybe an Ibanez TS (in front of, or behind...) your Boss pedal might work out.

How do you do.
Opening a studio?
We might bump into one another in the future.

Howdy Neighbor!

soundphaRm -

Where exactly is Canton in relation to Peoria? How long have you lived in the Peoria area? My wife and I have talked about moving to that area, I'm currently in the Decatur armpit.. er area...
and the music scene here is lacking, expecially in the area of trying to find musicians who are not crackheads or worse...

Jimbo-
My VT120 has a Celestion 12' in it, but it is the best amp I've ever owned (I've owned some P.O.S.'s though!)

Seasons Greetings!

Howdy back at 'ya...;)
Canton is approx. 45 min. to the west of Peoria (right in between Peoria & Galesburg). One warning: if you are considering moving to Peoria, there are good points & bad points (I guess like everywhere...). Bradley University is located there. It's about 45 min. from Bloomington/Normal (yes, there really is a place called Normal, IL, as you Illinoisians know...). Another 40 min. to the East is Champaign/Urbana (yes, another urban area w/ two names...) where I interned (after rec. school) at a studio called "Private Studios".
There are a lot of slum areas, though, in Peoria...so your best bet is to move to a location (i.e. small town) outside of Peoria, far enough away to discourage crackhead/gear thief types (like Canton).
I don't want to continue hijacking this thread (it's a good one), so maybe drop me a line, and we can chat at our leisure...

BTW...Yummmmm....beer...what is your favorite (I know it's hard to pick just one!) from each category. A few come to mind here: Lager (probably my least fav)- Steelhead (brewed in my home county of Humboldt, in Northern Cali). Stouts (probably my fav category): Murphy's, Sammies Oatmeal & Imperial Stout...oops, I forgot to stop hijacking this thread...But when CD started mentioning beer (it's his fault- he started it...just kidding, CD ;)), I just couldn't help myself! Drop me a line CD & RVSMD...if it means anything to you, I'm in tight w/ Ian & Jay (Jay Goldberg Entertainment- they're like a second family to me). You know how in Centtral IL, good people are hard to find!

p.s...I'm on holiday break, it's a little after 1PM, is it too early for a beer? :)

Actually never heard of em, but Springfield and Peoria might as well be on seperate planets when it comes to the local scene. I hate it here, but I'm kind of stuck at the moment.

Oh and my favorite is Warsteiner.

Warsteiner is very good also (there are so many it's hard to pick a fav, though...).

The Goldbergs are the family that put on most of the big-name shows, downstate of Chicago. They are responsible for practically ALL the bookings (what they call talent buying) at The Madison Theatre (sadly, as I mentioned, no more live music there :( ), The Peoria Civic Center, ISU's Redbird arena, anything big that comes to Champaign/Urbana, including The Canopy Club, all the fairs, what's the place in Springfield called (?)- I never did sound there, personally, so I forget...
Basically, if you've seen a big name act in IL, and it wasn't in Chicago, they (the Goldbergs) were responsible for bringing them here (and the whole production effort, to boot). They are the 'Goldberg' part of "...a JAM/ Jay Goldberg Production". Anyway, I'm sure you've seen a show produced by us (although, I'm just a measly monitor engineer..;))...
Just to name a few groups we did the audio for: Blues Traveller, Violent Femmes, Slayer (7 semis on that one- they even brought their own stage!- we said, "We won't be needing that, we have a stage ready to go for 'ya! ;)), Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Ani DiFranco, Lit, Phish, Butthole Surfers, Marilyn Manson, Korn (at soundcheck their bass caused plaster to fall from the ceiling and about kill Todd the F.O.H. engineer, and also my direct boss...). For the sake of space I'll stop, you probably get the picture...;)

p.s. Is it too early for a beer? It's Christmas after all...:)

All we get in Springfield are those Budweiser true music concert series shows. I hate Budweiser and I hate the true music concert series. Are the Goldbergs responsible for those?

If so....GRRRRR!!!

Speaking of drinking, I should be drinking tonight at a Christmas party, but I can't go. You can't go wrong with a fine drink no matter what time of the day it is.

In the immortal words of Party Boy; I feel like partying right now!

Yeah that Budweiser True Music stuff really sux...no they're not affiliayed w/ those shows, just all the other major shows in the downstate area (see above post). Cool, well since it's the season to be jolly, I'll kick start my joliness w/ a couple of pints of Murphy's Irish Stout!
Boy, those Irish can really brew a badass stout, eh?

I've never had an irish stout before. Actually, I can't even find decent import beer around here. The bars suck and Friar Tucks only has a limited selection. A few ales here, a few lagers there. All in all a very limited selection.

the Rat is great with solid state amps, not so much with tubes. The metalzone is great if you know how to tweak it correctly, and the megadistortion is great if you know how to tweak it correctly.

If you can find an OLD zoom distortion, get that.

Keep in mind that the tone you need to dial in in the studio may be 180 degrees from where you set your amp for live tone. When recording I tend to have to ease up on the overdrive a bit to get a nice blendable tone. Our band is death metal and I am recording using an insane Mesa Boogie Triple rectifier. I still had to roll off some of the overdrive and much of the bass to get a good recording tone.

If it is insane overdrive you want though, invest in a good 100W or better guitar head. Nothing beats 150W of overdrive through 280W of celestion heaven! :P There isn't a pedal out there I would record with. The mesa overdrive is more than fine!

except like 55 or 60w of overdrive through 280w of celestion heaven! i mean considering the lower wattage amp is enough to jam with even a really, extremely loud drummer and will distort more and at a lower volume than the 150w amp.

2 words my friend... Mesa Boogie. ;) Why do you think Mesa are almost an industry standard among studios!

If you want serious, and I mean serious overdrive. Try a triple rectifier on for size.

True, so true...but if you find the need for "studio clean", time to find a different amp.

For some reason I'm not getting thread update e-mails... oh well, anyway...

We used to have Murphys around here, but I haven't seen it in a while. Can't find the good ol' Oatmeal (Sam) Stout around either.
I am partial to pale ales and porters if I had to pick two to be stuck on a desert island (with much ice) with.

So what is the compromise between excellent tube overdrive and "cleanliness"? Fender?

I've noticed the "180 rule" for gain/distortion from the little I've recorded, very difficult to adjust to sometimes.

If you think you have it bad in Spring-patch, you'd be in hell here.
Concert? What's that? When local bands play outside at a run down, ghetto, crackhead bar? Good times...

Decatur sucks!

Oh well it's Christmas, I shouldn't be brooding over my geographical misery.

Seasons Greetings!
CD

Well I tend to dissagree in one way and agree in another. Truth is I can dial in just about [/i]ANY tone I want on any of the 3 rectifier channels. It seems at times I have to roll off quite a bit of bass in the room Im mic'ed in but once I get rid of the room-booms I get imaculate tone.

And what about heffeweisen? Widmere brothers with a slice a lemon and I'm present at any party!!

I've not had really good Heffeweizen, but the Michelob Heffe wasn't too bad... Don't know how it compares with "true" Heffe.
