For BOSS BR1600 Owners.......

Okay, im a total newbie to this site, and am pretty new to recording in general. Anyways im looking at multi-track recorders and i saw the BOSS BR-1600 and i was immediately attracted to its features. I own a few Shure SM57's and PG 81's, a small 16-track Mackie mixer, and a moderately sized room for band practices and-now possibly home recording.

Do i own everything i need to start recording if i buy a 1600?? Where is the cheapest place to get one on the internet(new or used)??IS there any other multi-trakkers i should look into?? Any other information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Your local music store (Boss/Roland Dealer) is the best bet.

You can come across them used as well from people who have traded up.

I think you will be very happy with it. Those mics should be a great start.

I had one but traded up to a Vs-2000 (because I seem to have more money then brains).

The BR1600 is a VERY nice unit, easy to use, sounds great.

The features for the recorder on musicians friend intrigued me and I ended up getting the BR1600 off of ebay. From what it looks like, I'm gonna have a lot of fun for not too much headache recording with it.
 
The limitations I didn't like...

(and these are certainly not a show stopper).


1. No routing (The input you are plugged into can not be routed to any track you wish, any time you wish. Higher end units all do this, and do it well)

2. Phantom Power On/Off has no obvious indicator, so you could accidentally leave it on and cause damage. Also, Phantom power on/off is a multiple button + menu operation, when it should be as simple as 1 button.

3. Limited to 8 traditional tracks, because 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, 15/16, are all paired up as stereo tracks, and have "uses" that you feel obligated to save them for (ie: rythym tracks, mastering, bouncing). So, I only ever felt I had 8 real tracks to work with.


However, all these issues are very minor. It is a very fun machine to use, and in mu opinion it sounds great. I love the COSM (but I would have set that up different as well).

I really loved the loop effects section, but felt the compressor was limited. (No joke intended there).

Great machine all in all though. If I was rich, I would have kept it, and upgraded, just so I could still have one.

p.s. Make sure you upgrade to software version 2.0 because thats pretty cool too !

I've heard

that for output to monitors you have to get a volume controlling item such as a mixer. Is this true?
 
no, you can hook it right to your stereo and control the volume with your master on the BR 1600
 
For monitoring, I use one of the two headphone jacks routed to my near field monitors. I did not like using the master fader output, as sometimes to monitor as loud as I preferred, I had to peg the signal which obviously causes other problems. Using the headphone jack lets me set the master fader at the proper recording/playback level, and still monitor at whatever level I desire. If I ever need both headphone jacks available for headphones, I just unplug the monitor from the jack, plug in the headphone and I'm good to go.

Matt, I have the BR 1600 and haven,t upgraded with the version 2.0 as yet, any chance you could briefly explain what the update does?
 
As I recal it did about 5 Major things, but who knows how many other countless little bugs or improvements it makes.

Some of the major ones were :

Improved Mastering Toolkit

Extra Cosm effects for Bass Players

Improved Vocal Tool Kit

Improved Midi

and many more....

Check out the boss web site (sorry, I have no link for you) and there is a pdf file you can download the details exactly what the improvements are.

tried downloading the version 2 update from the boss website, my winzip said the file was corrupted. You guys know any other place I could get the update

Go to www.download.com and download winrar instead.

I am an network guy for a living, and recommend it over Winzip.

I don't think the file off the web site is corrupt, it's your winzip or your computer doing that to you.

I have the upgrade downloaded on my computer right now.

Send me an email a mattkw80@mnsi.net and I will email it to you.

It is 3.46 MB.

I tried to send you the Boss v2 upgrade attachment,
but your email rejected it due to "attachment filter"
or something like that.

For whatever reason, you cannot accept attachments.??
