I record in the basement of a 100+ year old house. I also live with three other people. They tend to walk, run, jump, scream, shout (just about everything you can think of) above me.

I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions of how to make it so all of that stuff doesn't pick up so much on my mics. I can usually cut most of it out with the help of the Noise Reduction feature of CEP 2.0 but some of it just isn't possible.

It probably would be possible to move into another room but down here, I have privacy and a locking door.

What should I do?!?!?!?!?!?

You need to build a decoupled ceiling from the floor joists above, with two layers of drywall. Fill in between with insulation. Also carpet the floor above, and use thick padding. For maximum isolation you also should decouple the walls.

Either that, or record when they are asleep or out of the house :(

If you are recording at "Highest Quality" mp3, this shouldn't be a problem. :p

With shotgun in hand... Climb the stairs... They'll get the idea...

here's a second on prop 964 (skillful use of influence)
aka: gun

short of insulating the celing (have problems? try money!) you'll probably just have to live with it

Hey! That wasn't funny! I was only offering an alternative to people who want to save space on their computer.

Or gagged, hog tied, and stuffed in a closet

Absolutely hilarious! :D

I guess I'm recording when they're all asleep.

I recommend tear gas. Best of all, its release can be triggered remotely on the same switch as your 'on air' light or whatever. :D

Selfish, immature roommates. Join the club.

I concur with the other replyers' recommendations.

#1 Record when they sleep.
#2 Attempt some insulating.

well, if they won't listen to reason and work WITH you......i'd crank up the Marshall or the drums when they're trying to sleep (2am usually works), and when they complain, you can tell them that "now they know how you feel when you're trying to record (which requires some semblance of quiet) and since they consistently decide to wreck it by being noisy.....and that you're just returning the favor and recording while they sleep, since YOU can't seem to get any quiet any other time." it's effective for getting your point across.....but doesn't tend to make friends out of housemates. :p

and there's always the option to move. :D and see if you can score a top floor space this time--that way you'll be immune to footsteps from above.

beyond that, you can either try to record when they're not there (which really crimps ones ability to "record when the muse strikes"), or you can "solve the problem with money" by doing the double-layer ceiling listed above.

i can't think of any options beyond that....

cheers,
wade
