I always get stumped trying to figure out should I spend $ on improving mics, mic preamps, improving my headphone monitoring system, CD recording, or mastering device. What do you fellows think? What would be the most important part of this food chain?

Most Important

For sure would be replacing ANY headphone monitoring system to a near-field monitoring system.

I don't know what mics you use now, but I prioritized things for myself last Friday and decided that until I've got an appropriate assortment of mic, nothing else really matters.

But I'd really like that amp I was playing with yesterday at Mars...

What Recording Engineer said......... ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!

For anyone who has any doubt whether headphone mixing significantly affects sonic characteristics, try this simple test.... Use a POD or mic up your favorite amp. Using ONLY headphones to monitor with, select a dirty guitar tone that sounds good to you thru the cans. Wank for a minute or so, recording the sound.

Play the sound back using headphones, then playback again thru monitors - 99% of the time, the tone your decided upon and sounded good on the cans will sound like absolute CRAP thru the monitors.... but if you had made the tone decision using monitors and recorded it - it would have sounded good on both the monitors AND the headphones....

(How do know this??? A client I just finished a tracking session with needed convincing!!!)

I got

I'm sorry,my fault.I was not clear. I have monitors, reveals. What I mean is should I upgrade my monitoring for muscians in the studio, more heaDPHONES better headphoneamps. Now it is very hard for players to hear in the studio. Its only 18x30 so when you have a drummer hitting away other people sometimes can hear themselves.

it sounds like you have your answer...........if it is hard for them to hear, then their playing will be affected. That's where to spend some money.
