Hi guys,

So I have a pretty noob question here. I bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 interface and a couple Yamaha HS5s the other day, but I have failed to make any sound come out of the speakers! I registered the interface and it said there are no drivers necessary for Mac users (which I am - OSX 10.8.5, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo processor) and it is simply "plug and play" but the 2i4 is not an option on the input/output routing in Ableton Live, Traktor Pro, or just as a general sound card for my computer. Apparently no one else is having this problem which makes me think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but Focusrite support hasn't got back to me yet and I'm really tired of making music just using my headphones! Any help at all would be hugely appreciated!

Strange, all the Focusrite specs say its compatible with 10.7 and above, yet they have no drivers available.
From the manual:
Mac OS X:
Your OS should automatically switch the computer’s default audio outputs to the Scarlett 2i4. To
verify this, go to System Preferences > Sound, and ensure that the input and output are set to
Scarlett 2i4. For more detailed setup options on a Mac, open Applications > Utilities >
Audio MIDI Setup.

See if this youtube helps

Click the apple at the top left, 'about this mac', more info, then system report.
Check under USB devices to see if the device is recognised at all.

If you don't see anything there that could be the scarlett, try a different USB port and a different cable.
Note, this device list doesn't auto-refresh.

If you get it to show up, then check Audio/Midi Setup in utilities. See if it's listed there.

Apparently the 2i4 is recognized when I do that, but it isn't an option when I go to the Audio MIDI settings. Maybe my computer reads that the device is there but doesn't know that it's an audio interface? I don't know why/how that would happen though if there aren't any additional drivers needed. I've messed around with my security settings and everything thinking it was maybe that, but haven't had any luck so far.

I know I was looking for an older driver (because he downloads a driver for Mac in the tutorial video you posted) but can't find one anywhere. I do have a slightly older computer (mid 2009 model) but I still don't know why I would still need the old drivers when my operating system is fully updated.

Hmm. If it shows in system report, that means the computer recognises it, but doesn't necessarily mean it'll work.
Strangely, that's exactly what would happen if the drivers were missing.

I read something in passing about firmware upgrades for that device. I wonder is that worth a google?

The 2i4 doesn't have an external power supply so it might be worth trying another USB port just incase it's not getting enough juice.
You're not going through a hub or anything, are you?

If you have a powered hub it might be worth a go.

These are long shots but worth trying.

Figured it out finally!

They really shouldn't say drivers aren't necessary for Macs when they still are in some instances - turns out it WAS a driver problem. I downloaded the latest one from the beta section of the Focusrite website (beta.focusrite.com) and it's working beautifully. Thanks for help though! Hopefully if someone else is having the same problem they'll find this thread and it'll save them a ton of time troubleshooting.
