has anyone heard of this preamp? Do the effects that come with it seem like good quality? i have a pentinum 4, 2.7 GH with a Soundblaster Audigy 2 platinum soundcard. And i want to get a rode NT10000, And this preamp i mentioned. Do u think that i should get good recording quality with this equipment??? Or can some one recommend a better amp for under 700, and better mic for under 500? Or u can just say i have 1200, and name a preamp and mic. thanks

I'd recommend a Focusrite Trakmaster, with the digital I/O card into an Echo Mia (using SP/DIF input), and a Rode NTK mic.

I find this a very clean setup. It's a tad cheaper than the Voicemaster, and 100% transparent and clean. No noise.

thanks

thanks. Alittle cheaper would be better. Is there anything else i can add to the setup that u recommend, like other processors.

Audio Technica 4050 or Shure KSM 32 and Grace 101 or FMR RNP.
BLUE Dragonfly and FMR RNP (borrow $74).
Great River ME1NV and Shure SM57.

The only downside is the chinese pots. The de esser, expander, compressor, eq, tube "warmth" (chessrock loves warmth) and adjustable preamp (high pass filter) make it a much more desireable pre than the trak IMHO. I've had mine for a year and had the pots on the pre replaced under warranty. They had to make something cheaper to bring it in at this $ level. They sound good, they just don't last

I have one and love it. I bought an Avalon M5 pre-amp and can honestly say that the Voicemaster pro sounds better with all of my mics (to ME). I still try the Avalon, but seem to end up with the Focusrite. Take my opinion for what it's worth. I have spent much time with both.

Upgrade your soundcard before you look at preamps. No preamp sounds good going through a SB-card.

sooooooo what else

I need a better sound card? Well, someone mentioned a Ecko MIA, is that good enough to record????? So the voicemaster sounds good? Well, I guess I know what to get now. Thanks, and people mentioned the Rode NTK, I guess that mic is good enough too. So here's what I'm a get.

ECKO MIA
RODE NTK
VOICEMASTER PRO

Now I don't have any of the wiring or plug ins or anything. Does the mic and amp come with everything ill need to plug into the soundcard and start recording or do I buy that separate?

really

I'm into recording hip hop and r&b, all I need the preamp for is vocals. So if the voicemaster pro is a excellent choice for makin my vocals sound real then please recommend it. But if anyone knows anything better under the price of 700 let me know. Also the rode ntk is a tube mic, does that mean my voice is gonna come out sounded like I'm on the phone or something? Cuz I would like my voice to come out real. I have a voice sort of like chingys, maybe alittle deeper. But close. I would like my recording to come close to his. I know it won't becuz it depends on the room I record in and the equipment and also the persons ability to record. But please if what I am choosing is good, let me know, if not. Let me know and please tell me ur opinion. Thank u. I wanna get the equipment on my next pay day. That's next friday. So I have a week and a half to decide.

RODE NTK - seems to be a tube mic, if someone has an example of what it sounds like, like a song or something. Please lead me to it.

VOICEMASTER PRO - I checked on this and some of the reviews didn't seem so good. They said the sound was't all that great or the quality. Maybe that's becuz of there setup, I don't know. Again if someone has an example please lead me to it.

Thanks to those who helped me and continue too.

If you're doing hiphop/rnb, take a look at the Shure SM7 microphone. You'll need a good pre for it though, cause it's kinda low output.

Echo MIA is a great card. Haven't had any experience with the Focusrite unit.

OK -

You'll need a mic stand.

The NTK comes standard with a power supply, and a special mic lead from it to the power supply. It also comes with a small to large thread adaptor (if required) for the thread at the top of the mic stand.

You'll need a regular XLR mic lead to run from the NTK power supply unit to the Focusrite XLR input on the front panel

The Focusrite pre comes with analog output as standard (1/4 inch).

If you opt for the additional digital card, The focusrite offers a SP/DIF output.

The Echo Mia (at least on my earlier model, without midi) accepts SP/DIF stereo input (looks like a RCA female socket) and also two 1/4 inch balanced inputs, and two 1/4 inch balanced outputs.

So if you run digital from the Focusrite to the Mia, you'll need a special 1/4 SP/DIF cable (which resembles a gold plated RCA lead, but which is 75 ohms impedance, unlike RCA leads)

If you run analog from the Focusrite to the Mia, you'll need simply a 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch male-male lead (like a guitar lead). A high quality lead is recommended, and keep the cable run as short as possible.

Download the latest drivers for the Mia from www.echoaudio.com

If you use this setup with n-tracks (www.fasoft.com) it offers pristine quality, inaudible noise, and eclipses the soundblaster completely.

Be aware you should remove the soundblaster software completely and remove the soundblaster card/hardware ahead of installing the Mia.

The Mia has no on-board sound generation / synth chip, so if you play PC games using the soundblaster that rely on internal midi, it won't work.

VOICEMASTER PRO - I checked on this and some of the reviews didn't seem so good. They said the sound was't all that great or the quality. Maybe that's becuz of there setup, I don't know. Again if someone has an example please lead me to it.

I would like to see that quote or link. The Voicemaster Pro is the top end of the Platinum line and a lot of people compare it to the the old Voicemaster or lower end units which are not that great. I have only seen one negative review of this box in the 1 1/2 years its been around.

hahaha

voicemaster pro - maybe i over did it when i said it didnt sound to good, i read some of the reviews and most people said it was good, just a couple said bad things, but not really bad. ANyways, I got all the info i need. accept how the Rode NTK sounds, I heard the Shure KSM 44 was a great mic, now if u had to rate the 2 which would be better, the RODE NTK or the SHURE KSM 44??? Thanks for ur help

Sounds like you're listening to lots of advice. Which is good. But after a while you'll simply get information overload. And it won't clarify your ability to select a mic. The KSM44 is a good mic also.

I think it's probably time to set a budget, then try the gear out for yourself, because here in an internet forum, we can't really adequately do comparisons without hearing your voice, your material, and your preferences. One one person's voice the KSM44 may be better than the Rode. But for another person's voice the results may be opposite.

Find a reputable music store, who will let you try the mics, and record them into a DAW, for playback in a controlled setting (maybe through quality headphones or when the store is quiet), or else maybe rent this gear to try before you buy any of it.

Hey,
I just orderd the NTK and the voicemaster pro two days ago after doing tons of research. Can't wait till it gets in. I think this combo would also be a good choice for you. I also have an echo mia..hehe. What do you know?
-Vic

Actually they match up very nice. However stay off all the effects that the Voicemaster Pro has. The NTK is already very warm sounding and adding the effects i.e. compression, warmth etc degrades the signal. Straight through however, makes for a really nice tone. I run out the VM Pro into an old DBX 160x with the overeasy switch on and am getting quality results for tracking vocals.

hahaha

yeah VIC that is crazy hahaha, well when u do get it u let me know how good the equipment works okay? So stay away from the effects huh, Well, i hope everything works according to how i think there gonna come out. There was a question i wanted to know though, does anyone know how to record people gettin crunk? I mean like on that lil jon song NEVA EVA. Where they be like NEVA EVA, EVA NEVA. Where it sounds like 10 people r yellin it. Is that all they do, or do they add some kind of effect? Thanks again, Hey VIC, do u have a site of ur songs? so mabe i can hear how u sound when u get the equipment.

Use the compresssor Very lightly with fast attack and slow release
Use the eq with all settings at twelve o clock to start
Use the de esser at twelve also
Use the expander at twelve
Are you starting to see a pattern?
Set the pre at twelve with no roll off (only to start, you may want ato brighten it but I doubt it)
Don't use the tube warmth or vintage harmonics for a while, get a good solid sound first and dick around later
