Hello
I am a new member of homerecording.com, and was wondering if any of you helpful chaps could advise me on preamps.
Right now i'm looking at getting 4 channels - TL Audio PA-1 and possibly Joe Meek TwinQ (or something similar). But am also considering Focusrite 428.

What are all your thoughts on 4 channels of Focusrite vs 2 of TL-A and JM?

Thanks,
Pete
:)

I don't have any experience with the units you've mentioned but different flavours are always good.

Any chance you can audition them for yourself?

Welcome to the BBS.

Thanks Kevin :)

Definately agree with different flavours, but thought the pres on Focusrite ISA might be a step up from TLA and JoeMeek.

Will have to audition them and see.

Thanks,
Pete

And that thought is a good one. What kind of recording are you doing? While variety is nice, a good clean track is great! Once you get a nice track you can play with compression and eq and effects and all kinds of stuff
PLUS>>> you get those nice converters available from the ISA

Id be interested to see how you get on with this. Im in a similar position myself. I have the new Twin Q and for me it was a synificant step up from the pres id been using previously in my 002r. Maybe slightly more coloured by my ears, but generally of a higher quality. Not sure about the comp but i find the EQ pretty useable too.

Im considering the isa 428 as i need the extra pres... Im just not sure the improvement over the joe meek pres will justify the cost. To an extent, it doesnt really matter about the direct comparison, i just need extra pres, but it would be nice to think after spending that kind of money id have something better than i already have.

If i get chance to hear the 428 for myself i'll let you know how IMHO it compares to the JM. Although I do worry a few minutes minutes listening in an unfamilar enviroment may not be enough to tell!
