I got my focusrite 2i2 today. I recorded a remix to a song. The recording was kinda dull. The mic I use is a local Indian brand and it's a 70$ dynamic mic. I used Audacity to record . Instead of a pop filter I used a windshield.
So can you tell any solution

The remix-

Hey,
You might wanna add a language warning. Some people aren't too fussed on that.

I don't think there is a problem.
Sure, there are better mics out there, but your clip is pretty much how beginner recordings sound.

You just need to learn the basics of vocal treatment and, if possible, get away from stereo backing tracks.
A little bit of tactful eq, and some time based effects would probably go a long way.

For example, most vocal tracks probably have a high pass filter put on them at some point. Maybe 100hz? maybe 120? It depends.

This cuts out unnecessary bass that makes the track feel muddy and detached from the music.
Without the low pass you can adjust the volume/compression all day; It's still not likely to fit.

At last.
You got an interface. Well done.
How much better is that than the old way you did things.
Ditch the windshield and make a pop filter from your girlfriends tights/stocking and a piece of scrap wire.
Your recordings will sound less dull because you are effectively attenuating some of the high freqauncys with the windshield. And thats what you want some more of.
Nice one mate.
A warning about the bad langauge might have been prudent as Steeno said.

Go forth and multitrack.

SO the mic is fine. I just have to learn proper editing?

You'll certainly see an improvement with a better mic, but there are more important things at this stage.
That's probably a good way to look at it.

There are endless guides and tutorials on youtube these days. Everybody is mixing/recording/editing, so have a look and see what's going on.
Just take your pinch of salt with you. Everyone's a professional these days.

Keep in mind that even the good hobbyists probably have a few years of experience, maybe some studying, maybe just hands on.
They've probably got treated rooms, at least to some extent.
It's not as simple as just buying the right gear, but it's not rocket science either.

Working to a backing track starts you off at a disadvantage. You don't have the option to make room for your voice, at least, not the proper way.

Liked the song?
Very much not my area. I'm sure it's fine, but I wouldn't know. :)

yeah.
There's a monitor outpout button on the interface. I turned it on but it didn't have any effect.

And if you have used the Focusrite 2i2, according to my recording the interface does the job fine as it is supposed to . right?

I've been able to balance off the result so my vocals set fairly well in the mix (at least to my ears).

I don't doubt it. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it can be restrictive.

Say a commercial mix was made around a light female voice.
If I record my vocal part over that backing track there's now a dull sounding male voice an octave (or maybe two) lower than the original voice.
It may work straight off, but it probably wont.

If you had the multitrack master you'd play with the panning of midrange instruments, or maybe make light eq cuts to guitars/keys etc.
Perhaps the original engineer cut back the highs of certain things to allow the original vocal to shine through.
I'll not be filling that hole, but I can't eq back in high end of specific instruments.

With a stereo backing track you can only take broad strokes at the whole song, you know?

The direct monitor knob allows you to switch between the computer's playback and the direct microphone/instrument/line inputs.

Set 100% one way you'll only hear the computer processed output.
Set 100% the other way you'll only hear your live mic or whatever's plugged in.

Your choices are:
to go 100% computer and put up with the little bit of latency. The advantage is that you'll hear any eq/reverb in close to real time
or
to mute the vocal track in your software and turn the knob until you can hear your voice directly.
The advantage is zero latency vocal monitoring but no processing is audible.

No offense: Asking questions is good, but I imagine that's in the manual.

Hey steeno, not on the 2i2, it doesn't have a mix knob. It has Direct Monitoring On/Off and the monitor knob controls volume to the monitor.

Atifkt should be hearing something through the headphones. Try with both Direct Monitor on and off and let us know what you do and don't hear.

Read teh manual for sure, your answers are there.

Good catch: Thanks! I don't have that interface.

The knob I was looking at is a separate headphone volume knob, so obviously make sure that's turned up.

I bought this unit last summer to do some remote recording. It's nice, but very basic. The lack of mix knob makes it less than ideal for a new-to-recording person.

It's doable, though. Adjusting master output bus level to get a good balance between playback and direct monitor works best.

Cant monitor myself during recordings. This is what I'm doing. I use audacity to record.
I put an instrumental track on which I record. My headphone has a 3.5mm jack so I have to use an adapter to connect it to the interface. I turn the monitoring button on and turn the knob to max. Now when I press record the instrumental can be heard fine , My voice is recorded but I'm not able to hear myself.

A solution please?

Ok So it's working but I can only listen myself when I turn the gain knob to max. I guess its due to the adapter and the windshield on my dynamic mic.

Btw the monitor knob on the front. What is its use? I turned it to max. and min. and there was no difference.
