for 475 dollars is there a more quality pre amp out there. it seems that i hardly hear anything bad about the RNP... but does it hold its own against a great river or sytek? how does it compare sonicly to these other two?

I like the three preamps you mention. I prefer the Great River and think it's on a different level. But, you can certainly find pros with good taste in gear using the Sytek (Albini) and FMR (Fletcher).

I have never used a Sytek, but other comparisons lead me to believe it is the same quality as the RNP but with a different sound.
I do have several RNPs and I owned a Great Rivers mp2nv for about 3 months, and I prefered the RNPs for what I do.

I record mostly Jazz / Country / Celtic / acoustic - vocal oriented stuff and I find the full bodied (but non-agressive) sound of the RNPs to meet my needs best. Plus I cound get 6 to 8 channels of RNP for the price of 2 channels of Great Rivers.

I do record Electric guitars / Bass / drums etc as well thought them and they do admirably.
