a set with double bass drums, 4 toms, a snare, 2 floor toms, high hat, 2 ride cymbals, 3 crash cymbals, china cymbals, and random cowbells/woodblocks. what do i use to mic the floortoms?? im using 57's for the tom-toms, snare, highat; beta 52's on the bass; mxl 2001's for overhead. so for a good rock sound, what do i use on floortoms?

Sennheiser MD 421 is the usual approach...

Set the mic to "m", point it at the floor tom & you're sorted. If you wanted a cheaper option you could go for another sm57, which would also do a decent job.

Maybe a bit irrelevant, but I don't underestimate the power of good drum tuning. Since I recorded a drummer who really knows how to tune his toms I discovered how big the diffrence can be.

I used to fiddle around for hours to get half a decent sound out of a bad tuned floortom...

hmm....

i've heard great sounds from a d112. i think the beta 52 would do the same thing. but you can pass with a sm57.

thanks guys, im thinkin the sennheiser would be worth checking out
