Flexible Playback Gear

The consumer audio JVC receiver I've been using to play back my mixes is becoming unstable, no doubt due at least in part to being pushed to its limits. Time to replace the little bugger and I'd like some advice.

I need the flexibility to select multiple sources and outputs and I don't need boatloads of power. My room is small (21'x18'), and both pairs of speakers that will be powered by the system are very efficient older Altecs, so a sweet 100 rms watts per would be enough. By the way, I never use the 2 pairs simultaneously. I definitely need quality gear, and it should give me room to grow (i.e. allow me to select from say, up to 10 different sources, and 5 or 6 different outputs). Eventually I’ll need digital input capability, but can do without it for now. My initial ceiling is $500, although this is variable to some extent.

What do some of you folks use?

Not in your budget but well worth it anyways.... Hafler P3000

Yamaha AX-592.

I noted you mentioned "multiple inputs...." in your post.

You may have a set up similar to mine. I really like this Yamaha "integrated" amp. It has inputs for two tape decks, CD player, phono [if you have vinyl left over] and plugs in two speakers with cut-off switches.

One nice feature of this integrated amp is a "clear-through" channel that eliminates any color from the amp itself.

You can record on both tape decks or from one to the other or from CD to tape, etc.

Although I do mostly CDs, I find it handy to be able to run a cassette tape for a temporary copy of something or to pass around to friends or a quick demo.

This unit runs around 500 pezzutos but is a quality unit. You can check it out on the net.

Happy Holidays
